    Hi

I have an old iPhone and I want to copy the contact list to my new mbp. When I connect however it firsts asks me if I want to upgrade the phones software. I do, in time, but I fear that in doing it, somehow in the process it will delete things on my iPhone.

So for safety I wish to copy my contacts over before I make the upgrade. This seems to be done in the 'info' tab in iTunes, where I have the option of clicking the box 'sync contacts' - however I again fear that instead of copying the contacts from my iPhone to my iTunes, that it will attempt sync my iPhone to the nothing on my iTunes and all my contacts will be deleted.

What is the best thing to do here?

You can install an app like this one to export the address book as a VCF file then send it to yourself.
