iPod touch syncing photos not stored on computer

To sync photos I'm using iTunes: sync from selected folders temporarily mounted via an USB stick. The problem is the content of the USB stick isn't static and previously synced photos get wiped out. Any way around this except keeping all the previously synced stuff on the stick?
