All iPads Syncing Photos to iPad taking up more space then it should

I'm not sure if I should post this here or in the iTunes section.

But I have a folder that's about a a gigabyte in photos, but when I sync them to my iPad Mini it makes them 11.1 gigabytes.

Can someone explain this nonsense to me?
