At my workplace we have a pair of RS2414RP+ with 4tb WD Red Pro drives in them in RAID 10. They are absolutely wonderful at what they do and I'm confident that, given the right network infrastructure, they could handle 25-30 Time Machine backups. Make sure they all go over a wired connection though; I've had a ton of problems with Time Machine backups over wireless.

This is great. Thanks!

How does everyone with a NAS, Synology or otherwise, back it up? Not talking about protection against a disk failure, that's what RAID is for. But no amount of disks in your RAID array will help protect you from theft, fire, etc.

I use BackBlaze to back up all my stuff - my Mac's build-in SSD and an external hard drive - to the cloud. The only thing preventing me from moving to a NAS is the fact that BackBlaze doesn't back up NASes. Are there any online backup solutions that support NAS disks?

Crashplan isn't officially supported on Synology, but I'm running it and it works just fine. Check their forums for details...

Officially supported options include automatic sync to another NAS, Amazon Web Services, Windows Azure, Glacier, etc.

And yes, RAID is not backup - if one disk fails you'll probably not lose anything, but a fried PSU or controller can mangle the lot, and a fire/flood/theft will almost certainly not be recoverable from.

Rsync over VPN. Oldie but a goodie.

Anyone using their Synology as Router?

I recently moved from FIOS to a cable modem (no router). I'd like to put a decent Firewall/Router in between the home network and cable modem (I'm just using a wireless router now). Anyone doing this with their Synology box? I also have another machine that I'm thinking about converting to a Linux Firewall.

Thanks!

Rob

I was doing some comparison shopping as well and came across this video comparing Q-nap and Synology. The dude on the video compares the TS-563 against the Synology DS1515 and DS1515+. Has anyone used either of these 5 hard drive nas systems? The Q-nap seems to be the better of the 3 systems.
