New 10.8 system user authenticates through a Linux LDAP server. User can login, but when we try to go to System Preferences -> Accounts then System Preferences crashes. When logged in with an admin account this does not happen, but of course we can't see the user's account in System Preferences because it's a network account. So we're unable to set the user's account as mobile or admin. Is there a way around this? Can you set a mobile account or local admin account via command line?

Synology DS1512+ LDAP server + iMac LDAP user logins

I have this exact same issue.

Logging in using a LDAP user account (that I have setup on Synology NAS's LDAP server) on my iMac, then go into the System Preferences -> Accounts settings the System Preferences app crashes.

Using local accounts on the iMac doesn't have this issue of course.

Has anyone got any ideas for fixes?

I have not yet found a way to make the account a mobile account without going through System Preferences. This seems to be what's needed. So for now I'm going to make sure the account shows as "admin, mobile" in System Preferences before upgrading to 10.8. For new systems I guess I'll have the user login to the new system with their network account, then use migration assistant, which somehow overcomes this problem.
