System hangs...Think it's Outlook

Just recently, my system has been hanging and is only recoverable by a hard reset.

The symptom is a spinning beach ball and a cursor that turns into an arrow when hovering over the dock or the pull down menus yet is inoperable.


I believe the culprit is Outlook as that is not opening when clicked or is instigating the problem. The other potential is firefox.

I am running the latest version of all software and am Mountain Lion. This issue has just appeared in the last 48hrs. Thoughts/ideas?

I would hate to have to delete and reinstall and reconfig office, but will do that if no other options. Any way to check for a corrupted system file or some other cause?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Comments to use mail or some other application are not helpful.
 
Temporarily use a new Firefox Profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager#Mac_OS_X

See if the problem is eliminated after about a day of using it.

If not, don't use Outlook for a day, kill the process. If the problem persists fire up the Office installer and install ONLY Outlook. No need to uninstall your current version, just install overtop. That ought to fix anything corrupt or out of place.

Other than that you can also to the generic stuff like resetting your PRAM and repairing your disk and permissions in Disk Utility
