System Preferences stopped unexpectedly

This is my first mac so I'm kind of freaking out even though it doesn't seem like a big issue. I was changing a few of my system preferences when the waiting color wheel came up. It spun a few times and then my system preferences closed and came up with a box saying that my system preferences had stop unexpectedly and asked if I wanted to send a report. Is this a known issue or is there something wrong with my Mac?

It's unusual, but if you send the report to Apple, just keep an eye on things. You could also try a PRAM re-set by following the instructions in the link below:

Make sure you follow the instructions for your MBP.. (A battery you should not remove on your own)

is it safe to send the diagnostics and user data to apple? I won't get spammed with 3rd party info or anything will I?

No it's safe, and it's good policy. Apple use the information to detect bugs etc.
