Could someone point me in the right direction for the developers version of a Dual 2.5Ghz G5? I'd just like to give it a try.

Thanks.

apple's computer lineup it the same as it is for developers..education people. home users....etc. THere is no version of the g5 made specificly for developers.

another note: It is against apples terms of use to resell a developers copy of their OS. Read the fine print mates ;)

In case you're a student, you may be tempted to go for the $100 student membership. Unfortunately, it doesn't entitle you to pre-release software. You should get the final version though (I got the final version of Panther, but unfortunately my subscription will run out before the release of Tiger).

My wife and I became Student Developers and we received a copy of Panther (which we already had). Will we receive a copy of Tiger when it is released commercially ( our membership lasts through the first half of 2005 which is when it will be released)? Just curious b/c I thought we'd only receive the OS that was currently available at the time we signed up. Thanks!

Thanks for answering such a ridiculous question seriously. It takes character not to flame a question like that in your response. My question was made with tongue firmly in cheek. I'd just like to get my hands on a nice speedy dual G5, and was suggesting that someone um... give me one. :)

I can't say for certain, but you'll probably receive Tiger. I've received two revisions of Panther so far, and I've been subscribed for less than a year. I'm actually trying to decide whether to renew my subscription - it depends on whether I can use another hardware discount next year.

Calm down, people...

So, am I right in saying that Tiger will install on an original iMac, it's just that Apple won't support it? Or what's the deal?

Come on, people, Tiger is not even out yet. Of course Tiger will work on most Macs, but some might not be privy to "eye candy" that Core Image brings.
For example, my dad's 800mhz 17" iMac G4's video card does not allow the cube graphic to be displayed during the fast user switching, but does that mean Panther works terribly? Heck no, it works great.
Oh, and TIGER IS NOT EVEN OUT YET. Quit complaining about what computers it does/doesn't support because it won't do any good nor do we even know the requirements. Most of us would be pissed if Apple released some handicapped system that worked on beige G3's rather than a kick ass OS than run on earlier computers albeit with some features turned off.

ibook and tiger

Is the new G4 ibook ready for Tiger (does it support stuff like core image??)

mmmmmm i guess not!

The performance gains and features supported by Core Image ultimately depend on the graphics card. Graphics cards capable of pixel-level programming deliver the best performance. But Core Image automatically scales as appropriate for systems with older graphics cards, for compatibility with any Tiger-compatible Mac.

Supported graphics cards:
ATI Radeon 9800 XT
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
ATI Radeon 9600 XT
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra
NVIDIA GeForceFX Go 5200
NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra
These cards are available in today’s PowerBooks, Power Mac G5s and both the 17-inch and 20-inch iMac.

if you have not assumed this already your ibook will run 10.4 core image just has some pretty effects it's the not the end of the world.

as for the scaleability it's apple BS ether you have a core image card and you get all the fancy crap or you dont and you dont get the fancy crap that is the "scaleability"

as i have said before

you need a mac with a built in firewire port and 128MB of ram, no dvd drive required no only core image gpu's.

ibook

i ordered the ibook with 1,2 Ghz and 512mb ram, hope i will notice some significant speed change compared to my 700mhz G4, 256 mb

Yeah, I've received a couple revisions now too. My subscription ends in the middle of June '05......so here's to hoping they release Tiger before that.

I'm not sure if I'll renew it or not.....I just got the developer discount on my new iMac G5......and my PowerBook is only 6 months old......so I doubt I'll need another discount on hardware.

Tiger scales happily off a video card to the CPU if your card does not support Core Image, but Core Image is not used that much throughout the OS, only in certain apps and only for eye candy. For instance, on a G3 machine, the splash effect on dashboard works, but it is choppy. There was more info about this on Appleinsider.

Early builds of Tiger were known to corrupt hard drives, as were early builds of Panther and 10.0.x for that matter. You are not necessarily safe if you run Tiger on an external hard drive with the main hard drive mounted.

Not to spoil your party or anything, but I would just wait until Tiger is released. We developers generally have dedicated machines for those early builds so we do not screw things up. Some apps are broken, the operating system crashes, things get corrupted and if that is your cup of tea, by all means still the OS and run it. Otherwise, just leave it up to us, we have to reformat every two weeks anyway.
