Is there a way to copy the system to an external drive in order to do a system restore and return the MAC PRO to factory specs? should it be needed in the future???

restart computer, press and hold option key until restore menu comes up.

Someone may want to verify, but I believe OS X can either reinstall from a recovery partition or from the internet.

Option works if you have a bootable CD/DVD in the optical drive or a bootable USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt device plugged in.

Command + r will boot to the recovery partition if your computer has OSX 10.7 or 10.8, and if your Mac is new enough you will also be able to access Internet recovery if your restore partition doesn't work for some reason.
