Whenever I click on the Stand By button, or hold down shift and click on Hibernate, nothing happens.

The system doesn't crash, no error messages pop up. Nothing happens.

I'm running XP with service pack 2. I don't have some of the latest updates because I was forced to do a system restore to an earlier restore point after said updates caused my system to frequently and randomly restart.

Any ideas about this problem (and/or the rebooting problem)?

I have a similar issue where I'll hit standby and it will go into it for about .5 seconds, then the superdrive makes that sound it makes upon bootup / wake up and the rest of the system turns back on. If I had to guess, it's a driver issue that Apple will have to (probably not going to) address.
