Engadget reports that it has received word that discount department store chain T.J. Maxx is carrying the 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad in at least some of its stores, notably pricing the devices at $399.99, nearly $100 off of Apple's price.
We made a couple phone calls and found some at stores in Ohio and New Jersey (including one who said they were holding their stock back for Black Friday) while we struck out in other parts of the country. Still, if you're looking to drop cash on one of these guys, we'd make a quick call to your local outlet before heading to the Apple Store.
Based on the images presented, the offer appears to be legitimate, but it is unclear how the retailer is able to offer the iPad at such a low price.

Warehouse club chain Sam's Club recently began carrying the iPad in a number of its stores, offering Wi-Fi models at a $12 discount from Apple's prices and Wi-Fi + 3G models at a $20 discount.

Hmm...seems kinda sketchy. Since when does Apple allow such a big discount? Worth investigating, but I'll bet it's either a mistake or else they have like three iPads they will sell at this price and that's that.

And I'm guessing grown adults will wrestle for the 1 iPad each store will have.

Just called my local store. The lady on the phone said they carried accessories, not the iPad itself. I'm in Ohio; what Ohio stores are reported as carrying it?

I wish they were at this price where I live, I would buy it in a second, even the 16GB wifi model.
Here at my local shop, the 16 GB model with warranty is 800$, and I kid you not.

Apple product sells for less than RRP shocker...

It's sad (for the consumer) that this is news.

Somethins fishy. I ain't buyin it.

Nope. Not at all. My wife works for TJX Inc. They're almost certainly refurbs. They'll come in a plain box or something. A couple or three years ago a different TJX retail brand chain did the same thing with a large stock of refurb Sony PSPs, selling them for $100, about half off the then-current price.

If it's advertised, it's legit. TJX retail brand chain stores do not sell knockoffs or trademark-violating lookalikes. They tend to buy from the manufacturers themselves, not distributors, and the overwhelming majority of all their products are popular brand names. In fact, that's the hook for all TJX retail brand stores: Popular, pricey brands at lower prices.

Yeah, I'm betting on refurbs as well.

Has anyone bought one yet?

If it's not refurb, I may run out tonight and pick up a 2nd iPad for my son to play with instead of using mine. (I ~need~ mine. :D)

The Clarksville Tennessee store has them.

So are they new or refurbs. I don't remember ever seeing refurbs there before -- assuming new. Maybe they bought them off the back of a truck in NJ. Ha.

Why is a clothing store selling electronics?

They sell more than clothing. Predominantly clothing, but they have a few gadgets and housewares. Why are they selling the iPad on the cheap? To get people into the store.
