T-Mobile Announces New Unlimited 4G LTE Data Plan With 2 Lines for $100

So you are fine with knowing you aren't actually getting cheap phones. You are fine know you are actually paying full price for your cheap phones. It's just the presentation is better, and that is what you want. Right?

As long as you realize you aren't paying a lot less for your phones. Then that's fine with me, too.

My point is that if you plan on buying a phone through T-mobile, it is marginally cheaper than any of the big carriers. T-Mobile advertises that they've cut the competitors prices in half when that is simply not the case.

T-Mobile is a great deal of you use used or old phones. If you are getting an iPhone every two years, then you save little to no money in most (not all) cases.

Not that great of a deal when you factor in the $27 phone fee for each line unless you paid full price upfront.

So that would bring it to $154/month + taxes which brings it to like $160 we'll say since you only pay taxes on the $100 part.

I'm currently paying $140 a month after taxes for two lines under contract and 13 GBs of data on Verizon. It's not unlimited but it's plenty. I have the 10 GB more everything plan with a 20% employee discount and a $16 discount for 12 months that I got for just asking. Plus 2GB of free data for 24 months and 1 GB free for 12.

Not a chance I'll pay $30 more a month for crappy coverage just so I can say I have unlimited data I'll never use.

T-Mobile isn't changing the game. They're just throwing out things we've never seen before. Crunch the numbers yourself and you'll see that they aren't doing anything incredible.

If T-Mobile really wanted to do something revolutionary they'd give 2 lines of 3 GB of data each for $60 a month. Instead they trot out the word unlimited and can charge $40 more just because it's unlimited data that people won't use.

Or just make the payments on your phone and when it's done, your phone bill drops. It's a lot closer to the European model. (As opposed to making subsided payments on any of the other three carriers and never have your bill drop)

I much prefer the TMo model.

----------

I know that with my family of 4 smart phones and 1 tablet, if I were on AT&T, I'd be paying approx $100-$120 more PER MONTH, based on at&t's last quote to me about 3 weeks ago. Also: I wouldn't have free International Data Roaming or wifi-calling or free texting from gogo-equiped airplanes.

So overall, yeah, I'm pretty happy with T-Mobile, in spite of the fact that I usually have better coverage with at&t. Hopefully that improves.

But for the rest of you, if you like the recent increases in data allotments, and the reductions in your bill, you can thank T-Mobile for starting this price war. Proof positive that competition is good for all involved.

AT&T and Verizon can't remain uncompetitive. They've had to obscure things with sharing, increase Data, and introduce Next and Edge, to overall decrease prices to bring themselves back in line. They're never going to let go of Data Overage charges or reintroduce Unlimited data. But that's fine and will just be a differentiator.

Which is entirely what this current offer is about, IMO.

To your argument, directly though, I'd want to see historical price comparisons. I don't keep track of this stuff over time. Would you be willing to reveal what you had before the AT&T 10 gig shared $160 plan? As I really do not think AT&T would have introduced that if T-Mobile's Uncarrier movements and Simple Choice plans were just a smoke screen.

You can have the same options with the other carriers as well--pay off your phone either right away or over time and have a lower bill that way, or even with a subsidized phone have the bill drop when the subsidy/contract ends (essentially when you are done paying it off).

Good but still Verizon Grandfathered Unlimited wins

If you have a grandfathered Verizon plan or just buy one it is much better since you have unlimited tethering if you just pop out the sim and put in a router.

I'm at 156 Gigs this month, I use that little mifi Jetpack for everything, if I need to call I can just call using google hangouts using zero minutes as a VOIP call, tower strength is good, I can have a continuous voip data-only phone call and drive all around Southern California with a sim-less iPhone 5 or iPhone 6 Plus.

With the verizon loyalty 30 plan (yes 30 as in only 30 minutes) plus unlimited data I currently pay $45/mo + taxes.

Unlimited tethering when sim is in a jetpack.

4G LTE on verizon's network which is the faster than my sprint phone.

I can't stand Verizon store customer "service" but as a whole it is one of the mobile best data providers I've used.

I did have to pay $400 premium to buy the plan using Account of Liability transfer from an existing customer selling his plan but it is worth it since I don't have to buy home internet or office internet, so it has already paid for itself.

That's all fine and well right now.

But when those phones need to be replaced you're in for a rude awakening. You're either gonna pay $27 a month more per line.

Or a ton of money for full price phones.

We already own all of our phones. It is easy to buy unlocked T-Mobile/AT&T compatible phones.

That exactly what I was thinking.

Even though their network still lags behind generally, the ongoing trend of more data for more lines for lower prices is a good thing for us consumers.

Our (ATT) bill has only gone down in the last few years while our data pool has gone up.

A major reason why operators can afford to do that is LTE, which lowers their cost of delivering service. Plus, most of them are done or wrapping up their LTE deployments. Work on 5G standards is underway, but equipment won't be available until about 2020, so they should have relatively low capital expenditures the rest of this decade.

(nobody goes to T-Mobile for coverage, right?)

I did. I get better service at home and at work (where I spend 90% of my life) than I ever did with AT&T and Verizon (and cut my monthly payments in half).

But, I do recognize that I am a specific case where it actually worked out well for me and my circumstances/location are not the norm for most of the country.

switched from AT&T straight talk to T-Mobile finally this week and wow am I happy so far. Unlimited data one line plan. LTE speeds have been awesome in my areas I sends the must time and commute. Finally can just use my phone again as intended.

My Experience Upgrading Plan

I have added my gf to my T-Mob account, and we have both jumped on board to the Unlimited 4G LTE Family Plan for $100.

On Wednesday 10 December 2014 I called and CC Rep 1 said my mil discount would no longer apply, but I told her that there are some people online that were told otherwise...CC Rep 1 said she would send up a ticket and call me back.

Thursday morning (11 December 2014) I grew impatient waiting so I decided to call back, hoping their CC personnel would have more time/experience with the new plan. I spoke with CC Rep 2, who said my military discount would definitely still apply - and she was quite emphatic about nothing in their system being able to take that away, simply due to a plan/service change. Because CC Rep 2 was so convinced that my discount would remain, I decided to pull the trigger and proceed with the switch. I was transferred over to Sales Dept. and ordered a $15 SIM and put down a $50 deposit.

This part of the story was not really relevant, but I would like add that the Sales Dept. Rep was somewhat rude to me. First, he said that he was able to "work hard and get the price of the SIM Starter Kit down for me from $60 to $15". I know that's bogus but I kept rolling with it. He then informed me that my $100 Unlimited 4G LTE Family Plan comes with 5GB of data on each line. I told him that's not what the online literature says, but he was trying to argue - we ended up on a conference call with CC and he finally got the picture.

Later on yesterday afternoon (11 December 2014), the CC Rep 1 finally called me back. She said the ticket has come back down, and that the military discount would no longer apply. I told her what CC Rep 2 told me, and that CC Rep 2's information was what finally convinced me to switch plans. She didn't really have an answer for me besides "I'll annotate that on your account". While honoring the military discount of $15 per month would be nice, it's still a better deal than the other carriers. I will be staying onboard with the plan either way. However this experience with so many different answers and misinformation has been troubling...someone somewhere was lying (I assume unintentionally lying, since they're not on commission), and I will have to wait for my bill to find out who that was.

In the end, I'm glad I upgraded. There was (and still is) some confusion, but no worse than my years dealing with AT&T with issues like these. I have already been using several gigabytes in the last 24 hours from just a little bit of Netflix and HuluPlus. I'm finally able to use my iPhone 6 as it was intended.

Sidenote: I have been with T-Mob for 3.5 years. I am not only used to their coverage, but truly satisfied with it. However, if you are on AT&T/Verizon and are considering switching I highly, HIGHLY recommend you do the iPhone test drive before switching, so you know what you're going to get. Frankly for me in the last 1.5 years they have done so much to improve coverage that I'm regularly surprised at how great coverage I get.

I feel like your first experience is par for the course with T-Mobile customer service. There seems to be lots of mis-information or agents who aren't informed properly. I made the change to the new plan and was told my existing discounts I had would also apply too. It took me 3 months to get my discounts applied properly initially (another story for another thread). Luckily when I called in to make my change to the new plan the CSR was friendly and from Boise, ID and said my discounts would stick when the plan changes take place next Monday. Anyways thanks for your service too!
