Edit: A couple people have corrected me that the free 200 MB plan is still available when paying full price. I didn't read the article closely enough and don't mean to cause any confusion.

This is the worst article I have read on this site recently.
Skimming through the comments, I can see that a lot of people besides you have been misled by this article calling other people misleading.
I'm glad you've found out the truth.
The author may get paid by AT&T to write something like this.
Which part of what T-Mobile CEO said is not true?
If you have a compatible iPad no matter where you bought it, you get 200MB free data, no string attached.
If you want $0 down 0% financing, you need to sign up with a plan.

I went to the T-Mobile store on Saturday to try, no joy and very embarrassed faces

They are all shady

I went on Saturday as well. Asked a lot of questions. At one point the regional manager called in randomly to clarify the policy and he specifically said that I could in fact buy it on the installment plan and would not incur ANY other charges. They said I might have a $10 charge on my bill, but it would always be credited back.

Since this news broke I have called twice and spoken to 2 different reps who pull up my account and promise me I won't owe a dime over the iPad costs. They said they made a note in my account that I will never have to pay more.

So I'll wait and see, I guess. I'm not paying more.

Except that's not what he said. He said that all ipad users get free 200 MB whether they are new or existing customers. He did not qualify it like you just did.

"Yes. Everyone gets the 200MB of free data. No exceptions. No strings attached."

Your all clueless. I ordered over the phone financed and got the 10$ on demand plan. Was told I would be credited every month. If I'm not, I will call every month and have them credit me that 10$ because I was told other wise and I'm past my return policy. I don't see an issue calling in to get 10$ a month credited and keep my ipad with free financing. Those of you who are trying to buy now are screwed with the 20$ 500mb plan. But my contract or terms and conditions clearly shows I agreed to 10$ on demand. Nothing more nothing less.

Can't imagine Apple would be too happy about this either? Now Apple's website is incredibly misleading when going to purchase a T-Mobile iPad.
Apple's website is not misleading at all. Everyone that purchases a cellular iPad from Apple's website or an Apple retail store is paying in full. Apple does not offer the $0 down 0% interest financing -- that is entirely only a T-Mobile retail store or T-Mobile website offer. Regardless, since the cellular iPad is completely paid for when you purchase from Apple's website or an Apple Retail store T-Mobile has no problem offering you 200MB per month free, forever.

If you want T-Mobile's 24-month $0 down, 0% interest financing -- You have to go to T-mobile's website or a T-Mobile retail store where they will attach "the string" as you can not get BOTH free financing AND the $0/mo 200MB data plan at the same time UNLESS you have already have a post-paid voice line with them.

When you 1) complete your financing or 2) pay off the balance remaining THEN you may switch to the $0/mo 200MB data plan.

T-Mobile CEO Misleads on 'No Strings Attached' Free Data
New customers who paid full price for their iPad Air or any other tablet will be able to get the 200MB data plan for free.

I don't understand... what's the misleading part? That's what I thought they said.

It sounds like confusion is that the $20/mo plan is required to get an iPad with no-money down. But that's separate from the free data stuff.

I'm more confused than ever.

I'm sure T-Mobile is shaking in their boots that they lost a 'customer' that would not make them any money.

I don't know why you're taunting me and being a jerk. I was just giving my story and made it clear it's more my own fault for making assumptions.

I have had the iPad LTE with Verizon for a year and a half, paying $20/mo through last month, but did not like the idea of only using some of my data and not having it roll over. Sometimes I only use half. Sometimes I only need it a few days out of the month.

Free 200mb and on-demand for more data sounds ideal for my occasional business trips where hotel wifi can be weak.
I have also been strongly considering switching over to t-mobile once my contract is up on my phone next novemeber.
I appreciate t-mobile being around to shake up the industry from the "big two", I just did not appreciate the execution of all of this.

I don't understand what is misleading about this? Yes, the 200mb is still free for whoever. No, they aren't going to give you free financing and free data. You either buy the iPad straight up, or you pay for monthly access. It's called business.

Agreed. Some people just wanted everything FREE :D
I paid upfront for my iPad Air and I've got the 200MB free for life. Still a good deal to me.

When I signed up with the 0 down over the weekend the website/info said I would have to pay $10/mo for the on demand plan.

Now they are claiming it requires a $20min data plan.

Either they sort this out quickly or I smell some lawsuits will spring out of this debacle.

They must be honoring some of the people who did the EIP and 200 mbs. I have confirmed with multiple reps that I will get the EIP and 200 mbs for free.

Way to go tmobile

You could have had THOUSANDS of new customers with this, but instead you have now further turned potential customers away by doing it this way.

I went to the T-Mobile store in Temecula and they waited until I got to check out to tell me about the $20 a month data plan - needless to say I walked away and they lost 2 new potential customers (myself and my bf).

We went ahead and went to Best Buy and got a regular wi-fi ipad airs with 18 months interest free financing, and no lame $20 a month data package!

Hmmmm, "all clueless" huh?

So were you told or is in written in a contract?

Really? Your contract shows $10 free for life? I'd like to see a copy of that. You don't need to identify yourself, the contract won't give any hint as to who you are, but I believe you could be wrong.

Agreed. Some people just wanted everything FREE :D

Sure they did because when a press release actually says that will be the case then it is reasonable to expect that to be the case. Usually I am in the camp of the shut your ****ing face and learn to read, but in this case, no amount of fine print reading would have alluded to this so-called change.

iPad isn't just a toy, it is a productivity tool. Some people don't have the money to shell out for one -- why judge them because they finance something like this?

Besides, T-Mobile is providing FREE financing. Why, exactly, is that a problem is anyone's world? I often take advantage of free financing because it is free money and I can keep making money on my money during the promotions period.

I guess consider yourself lucky you can shell out cash for an iPad, but don't judge others.

It is so hard to say that iPad is a productivity device. It is not support the share the data between Apps ~

Same here - T-Mobile site was very clear in saying I had to pay $10/mo when I ordered over the weekend not $20/mo. Total monthly charge $35.98 (or something like that) with the $25.98 + $10 for on-demand data.

Sounds like they changed the rules after the game started.

Very misleading article. It should say: T-Mobile 0% iPad financing requires a paid data plan. All other ways of buying an iPad with T-Mobile service offer the free data plan as an option.

"You can keep your healthcare plan!"

Whoops, wrong lie! Seriously, the T-Mobile ipads were the first to sell out of the Apple stores, probably because of the free data. I expect they will be returned in droves.

Why? All T-mobile iPads sold at Apple Stores do get free 200MB with no strings attached.

This blog post is misleading

I think this blog post is misleading, not T-Mobile's offer. The $20 is a condition of financing an iPad, not a condition of getting free service from T-Mobile if you already have an iPad. If I own (and have properly paid for) my iPad, I can get free 200MB/month, period.

Financing an iPad

If you have to finance an iPad you probably shouldn't be buying one in the first place. I'm not surprised that the financing plan that gives you the ipad at cost has strings attached.

I bought mine out right and get my 200mb for free, not sure if it will be worth the $129 hardware cost to have the flexibility but I'll find out as the year goes along.

T-Mobile's site was saying $10 over the weekend - they must have changed it.

Edit: just checked they did in-fact change it from $10/mo for on-demand as the lowest option to $20/500meg. They will need to honor the $10/mo for weekend buyers or they'll be in hot water.
