Wait people really are complaining about this because it drops the video quality to 480p on a cell phone? Seriously? What kind of a basement-dwelling nerd actually takes the time to find that to complain about? IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT OPT OUT! Seriously! This is an OPTION that gives a BENEFIT to T-Mobile's customers! He's not kicking your dog!

Who's content with 480p? It's 2016.
Do you have a 80" screen on your mobile device? You're viewing content from a distance of maybe 6 to 12 inches on a screen between 4.5 - 5.5 inches. Is it even possible to notice the difference. AT&T and VZW love HD and 4K content because it will spin your data meter at light speed, either forcing overage fees or get you / their customers to buy super expensive data pools because you are needlessly wasting your mobile data on 1080/4K video content.

If you think 480p is blurry on a small screen maybe it's not the screen causing the problems here, I think you're in need of an eye exam.

Actually, I think you have it backwards...
As others have noted, the program is opt out so they can leave whenever they want. I can notice the difference between 1080p and 1440p on my edge+. It is sharper... that's it. The idea of not being to notice the difference between 480p and higher is lol worthy. To clarify, it's not blurry, it is pixelated, and more importantly, it is downscaled so I would personally prefer the highest res. 480p in exchange for free data is a good deal, but it isn't "great" quality.

It is possible to know the difference. Customers complaining about the T-Mobile deal is silly because they are not being forced to accept it, but there is a noticeable difference especially between 480p and any HD.

T-Mobile should have uploaded this video in 480p if it's so great.

lol yea

I love how TMo is getting a pass from people on here when no other company would.

T-Mobile sheep and Magenta Kool-Aid drinkers nearly always give TMO free passes. The number of back n forth Tweets is hilarious on TMO Promoted tweets/ads

I would give up on MR T-Mobile white knights but I never cease to find their replies amusing or on occasion interesting.

Whether 480P is good enough on a phone screen is neither here nor there. The issue is that T-Mobile have not properly implemented this.

If a content provider hasn't signed up to be part of binge-on then their content shouldn't be downgraded.

It smacks of T-Mobile coming up with a way to reduce the load on their network, rather than upgrading the network to handle the load!

Nicely summed up Chief
( Thumbsup since MR doesn't support most emotes )

You're right. Most companies out there are not so blatant as to do something so obviously against NN. Don't know why the FCC hasn't kicked their teeth in yet.

lol yep
Sadly however as the whole ATT WiFi feature delay debacle illustrated TMO and Sprint clearly to some degree had the FCC in their pocket book since both cariers got away Scott free for so long ignoring some regulations when their WiFi features launched

In my opinion they shouldn't be modifying any traffic from third parties if both sides of the connection haven't agreed to it. If the mail man opened up your parcel which contained a brand new coat and then he rolled it up into a ball and stuffed it into a carrier bag to save room in his mail van you'd be pissed too.

And as for the companies that have signed up with this service, it should be opt-in to enable the feature and not opt-out. I care more about a fair, open and uncomplicated internet than getting some music and videos outside of my data plan.

I love how this has become a big thing. First things first, the majority of people posting about it are going to be more techy than the average person. My wife can't see the difference on her 4.7" iPhone 6 unless she really tries.
Secondly, maybe it should have been opt-in, but it's not that hard to opt-out.
Thirdly, as someone who just left Verizon, this is awesome for me! I watch as much netflix as I want and don't pay extra for it. I can tell the quality isn't the greatest on my 6s Plus, but it's not anything to complain about, especially because it is free! All I can say is for what I believe would be the majority of people they would be just fine with it. :)
Edit: I've also noticed a few people complaining don't even have TMobile. What do you care if it doesn't affect you? If anything it will create competition so your carrier does better.

Interesting that this (reducing cellular usage) is the reverse of WiFi assist (increasing cellular usage) and in both cases people complain that they are opt-out..
People have to have SOMETHING to complain about! ;-)

Does opting in for Binge On forces you to 480p or can you use 720p/1080p on unlimited bandwidth as well?

Basically 1 of the gripes right now is ALL Data is "optimized" as far as video is concerned an issue stated in a past interview that John had blamed on "software issues" and has stated nothing about since not even in this video.

He's a hypocrite when it comes to arguing semantics and its truly sad the # of people falling for or buying into his acting, his carisma and his "Uncarrier moves"

All of us who see thru him are just sitting here waiting for the inevitable eventual fallout or sudden 180 he and or the company will no doubt eventually pull once they feel they've rangled in enough customers or start feeling the sting enough of profit loss from all these freebies at rock bottom pricing

Heck they already did some pricing increases of their own and bigger increases than most of "the other guys"

This is what you should expect with a third tier carrier like tmobile or sprint. Cheap. Low quality. Crap service.

Yea pretty much! Well put card fan couldn't agree more

Sounds good. Except tmobile and road trip don't exactly mix well together. Sorry kids, no signal here.. Such is life with a third tier, dvd quality at best video crap carrier and only if you don't travel 10ft. Maybe they'll have another uncarrier event where they announce unlimited music but you have to wear a tmobile bluelight special headset to hear. Those of you with third world tmobile service would probably love it though.

lol sad but true. Bet TMO customers would still lineup in droves for those blue light special headsets and ask hey can we also wear T-Mobile billboards on on backs?;)

I am newly a Tmobile customer; This is a good feature;

I can watch the more popular video streaming FOR FREE (meaning I don't have to up my data cap)
AND the down-scaled video is good for saving data.

Once, my kids grabbed my wife's cell (at the house) and watched some Disney videos. Turns out the thing wasn't on WiFi (we thought it was), they burned through our MONTHLY data cap in the spam of one movie. Yes, One movie that was accidentally on cellular instead of WiFi completely shut my wife out of cellular data for more than 20 days!!!!

Think about it; you want to watch a 20 minute video on some website on your cell, and little did you know it was in 4k!!! (down sampled <1080p to your little tiny phone screen) and there is your entire data usage for the month! Gone. Done. Oh! And by the way it's the 2nd, so only 29 more days with no internet!

Why not stream 720p?

I know it is possible to know there is a difference between 480p and 1080p content -- but, are you / is the average customer actually getting a benefit from the physical difference?

I mean, for example you have a 32" inch 4K HDTV, but are sitting 14 feet away from it. A 480p TV would do just as well. Even if you can notice the difference, at that distance, is it really worth that extra money? Relating this back to T-Mobile, that is for the Mobile customer, they can view more video with their data bucket or use more of their data for anything else.

If they don't if they really feel they can notice the difference and the difference is unacceptable to them -- they can self defeat Binge On.

Actually , there are plenty of people here not giving them a pass. And even though I won't give up Verizon for my main cell phone needs, I thoroughly enjoy what TMO is doing. For the past almost 2 years they have been shaking up the cell phone industry causing VZ and att to make some changes. More consumers are now fully aware of cell phone company tactics and are free to make their own choices.

If you didn't notice that the default video resolution is 4K (or 1080p or whatever) Not all videos on the internet have this nice little quality selector next to them.

What T-Mobile could/should do is have tiers:

Everything in 480p --> Free video

Everything capped at 720p--> a way to prevent run-away data usage (such as accidentally viewing a 4K video)

No caps at all

Pretty sure people are allowed to care rather or not they're a customer. They could be potential customers, they could have friends, relatives, coworkers etc that are customers and not wanna see em get screwed or listen to their valid concerns on the issue rehashed over and over.

Plus "Doesn't affect you"?
Seriously? If there's ANY grain of truth to the net neutrality issue or TMO trying to skirt it and such that affects people to an extent even if by virtue of "the domino effect"

Also as has been comented on past threads relating to the "binge on issues" ever since some content creators and video sources first found issues with binge on T-Mobile is on a slippery slope in some gray area. If the FCC gets involved this could be a case of T-Mobile having opened a veritable
"Pandora's Box" especially if other carriers try doing this but finding legal loopholes to charge for it.

Yea some people here are griping about data buckets but a phone isn't meant to be your all in 1
TV, Cable, HotSpotting, laundry washing, toilet cleaning, I can do a billion and 1 things all at once while talking to aunt dally about the next iPhone and how John Lugere is God device

It's a phone people there's ways to manage your data usage. Ya Don't need to whip out ya phone for every little thing.

If you know you have a too small 4U data bucket limit usage to what's in your plan only use your phone for essentials and minimal entertainment or find 1 of the billions of hotspots out there since WiFi is becoming more common than people griping about free stuff, limits on other stuff and frivolous lawsuits combined.

Heck steal your neighbors WiFi some providers now turn people's home WiFi into extra hotspots ( case in point Comcast/XFINITY if the person is using a Comcast device )

If your teen or children are overusing data/video I would 1: Have serious talks with them!

2: Question why you feel Johnny, Susie, ( whomever) needs a fancy smancy phone they probably aren't paying, working or doing chores for that you perceive as the do anything and want it all cheap device? Seriously kids and teens can live without smartphones, iPads, tablets etc

3: Restrict their usage if you're going to pamper the kids with costly devices

Actually, most people aren't. That's why Verizon and AT&T are still the big two and maybe the other two combined could match them.

What site are you going to that doesn't let you adjust resolution?

Any random HTML5 video. I could put a video on a page and host it in about 10 seconds, I can easily not include a resolution option.

Click Here (make sure your not on Cellular first)

I could never figure out why there is such outrage over this.

What is more important is why his coverage expectations for 2015 weren't fulfilled as planned. The maps are filled with blank areas T-Mobile won't hit. They are 5 miles from where I live and I am in a weird donut hole about 20 miles in diameter. wth?

And that pink guitar back there and the pink t-shirt isn't helping.

At least he is direct and honest, and he presents a face to a large corporation, unlike 99% of America's corporate entities.
