I'm an AT&T customer and have to stand up and applaud this guy.
This is how you handle a problem (if this is even a problem).

Gota love this guy as a CEO... could you imagine him as CEO of Apple? Imagine what product introductions would be like?
On a phone when it doesn't count against my data? I am.Who's content with 480p? It's 2016.
I thought people were more confused and upset that T-Mobile made this feature opt-out instead of opt-in.
He might as well say we don't throttle* our customers! We optimize** your data stream!
Do you have a 80" screen on your mobile device? You're viewing content from a distance of maybe 6 to 12 inches on a screen between 4.5 - 5.5 inches. Is it even possible to notice the difference. AT&T and VZW love HD and 4K content because it will spin your data meter at light speed, either forcing overage fees or get you / their customers to buy super expensive data pools because you are needlessly wasting your mobile data on 1080/4K video content.Who's content with 480p? If you think 480p is blurry on a small screen maybe it's not the screen causing the problems here, I think you're in need of an eye exam.

T-Mobile should have uploaded this video in 480p if it's so great.
I love how TMo is getting a pass from people on here when no other company would.
Whether 480P is good enough on a phone screen is neither here nor there. The issue is that T-Mobile have not properly implemented this.
If a content provider hasn't signed up to be part of binge-on then their content shouldn't be downgraded.
It smacks of T-Mobile coming up with a way to reduce the load on their network, rather than upgrading the network to handle the load!
You're right. Most companies out there are not so blatant as to do something so obviously against NN. Don't know why the FCC hasn't kicked their teeth in yet.

People have to have SOMETHING to complain about! ;-)Interesting that this (reducing cellular usage) is the reverse of WiFi assist (increasing cellular usage) and in both cases people complain that they are opt-out..
Does opting in for Binge On forces you to 480p or can you use 720p/1080p on unlimited bandwidth as well?
This is what you should expect with a third tier carrier like tmobile or sprint. Cheap. Low quality. Crap service.
Sounds good. Except tmobile and road trip don't exactly mix well together. Sorry kids, no signal here.. Such is life with a third tier, dvd quality at best video crap carrier and only if you don't travel 10ft. Maybe they'll have another uncarrier event where they announce unlimited music but you have to wear a tmobile bluelight special headset to hear. Those of you with third world tmobile service would probably love it though.
I am newly a Tmobile customer; This is a good feature;
I can watch the more popular video streaming FOR FREE (meaning I don't have to up my data cap)
AND the down-scaled video is good for saving data.
Once, my kids grabbed my wife's cell (at the house) and watched some Disney videos. Turns out the thing wasn't on WiFi (we thought it was), they burned through our MONTHLY data cap in the spam of one movie. Yes, One movie that was accidentally on cellular instead of WiFi completely shut my wife out of cellular data for more than 20 days!!!!
Think about it; you want to watch a 20 minute video on some website on your cell, and little did you know it was in 4k!!! (down sampled <1080p to your little tiny phone screen) and there is your entire data usage for the month! Gone. Done. Oh! And by the way it's the 2nd, so only 29 more days with no internet!
I know it is possible to know there is a difference between 480p and 1080p content -- but, are you / is the average customer actually getting a benefit from the physical difference? It is possible to know the difference. Customers complaining about the T-Mobile deal is silly because they are not being forced to accept it, but there is a noticeable difference especially between 480p and any HD.
Actually , there are plenty of people here not giving them a pass. And even though I won't give up Verizon for my main cell phone needs, I thoroughly enjoy what TMO is doing. For the past almost 2 years they have been shaking up the cell phone industry causing VZ and att to make some changes. More consumers are now fully aware of cell phone company tactics and are free to make their own choices.I love how TMo is getting a pass from people on here when no other company would.
If you didn't notice that the default video resolution is 4K (or 1080p or whatever) Not all videos on the internet have this nice little quality selector next to them. Why not stream 720p?
In my opinion they shouldn't be modifying any traffic from third parties if both sides of the connection haven't agreed to it. If the mail man opened up your parcel which contained a brand new coat and then he rolled it up into a ball and stuffed it into a carrier bag to save room in his mail van you'd be pissed too.
And as for the companies that have signed up with this service, it should be opt-in to enable the feature and not opt-out. I care more about a fair, open and uncomplicated internet than getting some music and videos outside of my data plan.
I can tell the quality isn't the greatest on my 6s Plus,
Edit: I've also noticed a few people complaining don't even have TMobile. What do you care if it doesn't affect you? If anything it will create competition so your carrier does better.

What T-Mobile could/should do is have tiers:
Everything in 480p --> Free video
Everything capped at 720p--> a way to prevent run-away data usage (such as accidentally viewing a 4K video)
No caps at all
Any random HTML5 video. I could put a video on a page and host it in about 10 seconds, I can easily not include a resolution option.Actually, most people aren't. That's why Verizon and AT&T are still the big two and maybe the other two combined could match them.
What site are you going to that doesn't let you adjust resolution?
