Just an update on my situation with tmobile. I have a sony xperia z1s with the $50 plan. I also have an ipad mini lte with the free 200mb plan and a Nexus 7 2013 with a free 200mb plan. At the minimum you will still need to have the $10 on demand data plan to have access to the free 200mb for the tablets but since i have a phone plan my $10 on demand plan is waived on each tablet, making my account around $56 ish a month.

Not sure what you mean by this. I have the 200mB free plan on my iPad and have no other T-Mobile accounts so I pay $0 for the 200mB.

Yeah I have no idea. I thought techinically you had at a minimum $10, but it was only for on demand data. so as long as you stayed within your free 200mb and didn't need extra you would be fine. but there is no way for me to remove it since its the lowest plan for the tablet. but since i have an account that on demand fee got waived. all i know is that i dont have to pay for the tablets as long as i have my phone line to waive the fees.

I did not need to pay any $10 when I set up the free 200mb pre-paid or post-paid. I had 2 sims and set it up both ways. Free 200mb, plain and simple.

I wont worry about it at the moment since my phone bill will be the same. but i will inquire about it once i leave my phone line. maybe i just need to call to have the on demand plan removed.

I am not a T-Mobile customer but would like to take advantage of the 200MB free data offer. Is it possible to get a retina mini at the $499 price (pay all upfront) and only have to free data plan or am I stuck adding on the $10 1GB plan as well? If I take the $10 plan, can I cancel the plan and keep the free data?

$499 upfront will get you the tablet without a service commitment. It is taxable... so plan on adding another $50 or so. You still get 200MB free data. You'll need to buy a sim which usually costs $10 at TMO retailers. They may give you one for free if you're lucky.

Several posts have reported TMO requiring a credit check even when buying an iPad in full without commitment. TMO assumes you'll sign up for one of their plans eventually and the tablet is subsidized about $130 below cost... so they want to make sure your credit is good enough to become a paying subscriber.

Credit check won't be a problem. Just the website and the online chat rep tells me that its not an option so I am not sure who to believe lol.

I bet the free 200MB plan is at the absolute BOTTOM of the priority list when it comes to delivering packets. There is no way T-Mobile is going to allow paying customers to have their service slowed down even slightly by the freeloaders.

This means that if your tower is busy, you will likely get horrendously slow speeds.

Either way, you get what you pay for. If I were to activate this plan it would be for very occasional use; I'd tether through my phone for serious use.

My experience suggests otherwise. I have the T-Mobile free service and it's ridiculously fast here in Manhattan. I also notice no difference in speed when I purchase the data from T-Mobile.

Also, if you think about it, the main reason for T-Mobile to offer the free data in the first place was to get the attention of those who weren't T-Mobile subscribers already. If the free service were slow, it wouldn't serve that purpose very well.

In my case, it has paid off for T-Mobile. Not only do I often purchase extra data from them (which I obviously would not be doing had I gone with AT&T, my current iPhone carrier), I've been so impressed with the service that I plan to seriously consider switching everything to T-Mobile when I upgrade my phone in the fall.

Granted, T-Mobile's coverage isn't as built-out as the other U.S. carriers, so I might feel differently if I lived in a rural area.

T-Mo prices are good but when I tried them I had poor coverage and had to go outside to make a call. Their coverage map showed I should have excellent coverage:rolleyes:

Needless to say I ended it in less than 24 hours.
Same with my experience. Their coverage map says I have excellent service near my apartment, but when my friend came over with his new T-Mobile Nexus 5, he he would go in and out of service. At most he would have 1 bar of LTE, and other times he would be on EDGE.
