It will take time for carriers to feel ok with complete loss of control over their clients with physical objects such as sim cards, but yes, heading there

You must work for Verizon who completely controls user hardware on their network.

A SIM card allows a user freedom to use any GSM phone they chose.

Isnt Software-Based SIM basically the same thing as CDMA-no Sim?
I would think physical SIMs are good because you can swap them out and such when you go to other countries (on unlocked iPhones)...Physical SIMS always meant more transferability to me...CDMA-Non-SIMs always seemed more untransferable.

I stand corrected.

no, I don't work for any communication company

Sadly im over apples iPhones and iPads, my next phone will be a Samsung Galxays S3 (due to the simply STUNNING, large screen size, battery life and feel in hand) and my next tablet is going to be one of the Windows 8 (full or RT, haven't decided yet) tablets.

The Era of apples dominance in the markets is coming to an end, and a slightly taller iPhone 4s and a slight smaller iPad isn't going to be enough this time. Which is why they are trolling with patents to try and ban competition.

Sadly this is the beginning of the end for apple, and a sign they have gone from an innovator under Steve Jobs, to being a corporate greed monster, expect less and less innovation, more and more lawsuits and "Forced obsolescence" of existing models to try and drum up demand for the new model released annually.

I expect apple to head back back into the toilet, like it did when Steve left last time, and this time Steve isn't coming back to bail them out again

I think Apple is doing so we can't swap SIM cards. :(

It's such a PITA, is it really necessary?

It is funny how many of you guys want a software based SIM, but don't realize why Verizon even went for SIM cards now....

Let's not repeat the whole CDMA debacle in Europe

He means no SIM at all.
A software based-SIM which is what Apple wanted from day one.

Actually I meant that if the internal reader for the nano SIM was slightly smaller they could have a little extra room inside the phone. But a software SIM would be interesting, and possibly less hassle than the current SIM card model.

SIM cards are a good thing people, even if they take a little space. Removable security brings with it a lot of freedom, and losing that would be a very bad thing for the market...

This would be very bad news. Everyone with a contract already running probaly cant buy the iphone simlock free. And if it couldt then good luck getting a nanosim replacement from your phone provider :(

1st Gen iPhone wasnt sold in Germany. So maybe since day 358?

Sorry for being the Klugscheißer.

That's weird. The first time I visited Berlin in November 2007, there was a huge poster on Potsdammer Platz, across from the former site of the Palast der Republik, and across KaDeWe on Ku'damm that announced the imminent sale of the 1st gen iPhone in November 2007. I already had gotten the first gen iPhone a few months before in August in the US. Anyone else remember these?

Exactly, the FCC mandated that even cable boxes be equipped with removable security. (our new DVR from Cox Cable has a Cable Card slot with a CableCARD instead of having it embedded)

I ordered sim cards from T-mobile, I forgot it has to be nano sim card. I was like Shoot! I have to return them. They aren't compatible with the next generation iPhone.

Has anyone seen any rumors stating the exact size of the nano sim yet? Including thickness? I'd be interested to see the percentage size reduction in comparison with the micro sim. As to me the difference looks marginal.

I hope we can cut the nano sim like we did in micro sim fromthe standard sim, else its a bit of problem !!

Problem? Don't know about over there, but here we just call our carrier and they send out new sims for free if you need to change the format.

You just need to then activate it.

I think you make good points here. I don't want that to happen, but without Jobs at the helm, this is very possible. Only time will tell.

Perhaps not. Surely they'd anticipate this.

I was totally surprised when I got my micro-sims in the mail only 2 days after talking to them. That was super fast. Excellent service.

Well that all depends. I have grave fears that ip5 is going to be a let down.
4S was a let down apart from the camera, and i wasn't willing to spend $1k just for a camera. I could get a decent DSLR body for that.

But - lets just say a miracle happens and ip5 blew me away, I'd most likely go in for a 2 year contract, and let the carrier subsidize the phone. Since a phone is a depreciating asset, it's probably the best thing to do. Here in au, my carrier charged me $10 per month extra for the 32GB ip4. Over 2 years that was only $240. I'd probably do the same.

All that said, I'd also be wondering what would be on offer for the Galaxy S3 4G which is going to be released here soon. Our family is pretty much all apple. My daughter jumped ship and went to an S3, and I got to say, it's quite impressive - despite it being android. They have come a long way.

If Samsung were licensed to run iOS, I would have already jumped ship myself.
