This guy obviously has no idea of what he is talking about. I am here at the Apple store in Victoria Garden. The sales person clearly said the T-Mobile contract free version is UNLOCKED.

I'm at the Apple store in Boulder, Colorado and was told the same thing.

It's not that simple because there's no iPhone listed on Apple that isn't tied to any carrier. The closest is T mobile but it now says contract free but with sim, whereas it previously said "..& unlocked" and "sim-free"

Ugh. They literally just changed that as of today.

I knew they would.

Don't worry about that. Unlocked phones will flow.

They may not have them available at this time, but Apple is working to get those unlocked phones out there. Why, because they need to sell unlocked phones, they want that money.

I can wait. And wait, it's only about 11 months until the 6 comes out anyway.

I did a chat with an Apple Store rep online and the person said that the T-Mobile version is unlocked. Seems like a bunch of misinformation is out there.

If I had to guess, the T-Mobile version is indeed unlocked, but Apple isn't advertising it as so (which is why they went back and updated the description).

cmon guys this is EASYYY. Just buy the at&t version and request an unlock code that is like $10 bucks. Heck i'll do it for $5 just send me your imei... but remember AT&T ONLY.

Looks like some people were misinformed. I think the only way to get a guaranteed unlocked T-Mobile phone is to order online. I don't think they will sell the unlocked phones in store.

No use talking to those dummies, they don't know anything. If you get a phone with a carrier name attached, you will be in deep doo doo. Period.

T-Mobile has contract free phones. Why are you even on the Apple website then, why don't you just head on over to T-Mobile? No point in being at the Apple store.

It appears that there's a lot of conflicting information floating around. At this point I'm leaning towards thinking that the contract-free T-Mobile version is UNLOCKED. When you select the T-Mobile 5s it does say that it's unlocked "iPhone 5s 64GB Space Gray (GSM) T-Mobile Unlocked" .

I just can't imagine Apple selling an iPhone as unlocked while it's actually locked to a carrier, they would have to deal with massive customer outrage.

There's a difference between "T-Mobile Unlocked" and "Unlocked".

We don't want the "T-Mobile Unlocked".

We just want the "Unlocked."

Get it?

T-Mobile Unlocked =/= Unlocked

#1 T-Mobile Unlocked <----NO!!!
#2 Unlocked <-------YES!!!

We want option number two.

It can't get any simpler. Really, people.

What could tmobile unlocked possibly mean?

Whatever the carrier wants it to mean, you're their slave. I'm dead serious. In most cases, a T-Mobile unlocked iPhone will only be unlocked when T-Mobile allows. You do what T-Mobile says, when THEY say.

They may never unlock it for you. It's hell.

We don't want any iPhone with any carrier name attached.

Apple Chat said it would work from day 1 with an AT&T sim card without any additional problems.

Worst case scenario, I can go bitch to Apple support and get a full refund/exchange.

T-Mobile Unlocked = Unlocked iPhone that comes with a T-Mobile SIM card
Unlocked = Unlocked iPhone that doesn't come with a SIM card

Bottom line, both are unlocked.

Care to explain why Apple would even put the words "Unlocked" in the product name if the product was locked?

I can't imagine Apple is willing to open themselves up to potential backlash for misleading their customers by using such a name for a locked phone.

They can, and they do, and I'm not going to argue.

You can do whatever you want, really! But the information is simple.

Don't get caught up in carrier drama.

Why the hell would you buy a T-Mobile unlocked phone if you're probably not going to use T-Mobile?

Things are getting very crazy and confusing.

Apple just removed the unlocked versions from the Apple store app ....

EVERYONE I talked to says there are no unlocked phones. Apple

Only Verizon rep claimed the Verizon iPhone 5s would be unlocked ... and that the best bet to get an unlocked iPhone 5s is getting the Verizon version.

The representatives don't know anything. There's no point in wasting your time with them.

Verizon doesn't even get unlocked phones and never have, they are lying to you so they can get you.

Dude... your last tidbit about Verizon is COMPLETELY WRONG, which questions your credibility about what the reps are saying.

The Verizon iPhone 5 was UNLOCKED, and could be used with AT&T, T-Mobile, and international carriers immediately.

My friend had one, and it was unlocked. It's covered extensively online as well, google iphone 5 verizon unlocked.

Unlocked versions were never in the Apple Store app. You need to hit continue at the $199 contract price to be able to select unlocked. However, as the iPhone is not available yet, it's not gonna let you do that.

Call Apple support and start a chat with them. They will say that ONLINE T-Mobile phones are unlocked. I'm guessing the in-store versions are locked.

I'm done.

You're literally the most uninformed person on this website.

Just had a chat right now.

They say it is locked to T-Mobile, and no unlocked 5s will be available.

Either EVERYONE I talked to is misinformed today (this is LA), or all these people may have a point.

Can you post a screenshot?

I'd rather buy an AT&T locked iPhone 5s than Tmobile .... ATT can be easily and cheaply unlocked, Tmobile is prohibitively expensive .

Camping out in a few hours, will focus on Verizon and ATT versions/
