Hey guys, what's up? I live in Brazil and a friend of mine is spending some time in US and i asked him to bring me an iphone 5s, which i bought in the apple store online (full price t-mobile no contract). He received the device and i asked him to send me the IMEI number to check the "status" of the phone. But when i put it on iphoneIMEI.info it appears that the phone is from ATT. Is this a problem or just some bug on the site? I searched for another site to check and i found one that told me the phone is unlocked but nothing about the carrier. Should I be worried about this? Thanks for the help.

Don't worry about it.

It's unlocked if the following conditions are met:

1) bought direct from Apple
2) paid full price for it
3) bought any model except Sprint

Se o seu amigo comprou o iPhone 5S da loja da Apple, o dispositivo só, ele será desbloqueado.

Uma dica. Se você comprar o iPhone 5s de os EUA não vai funcionar em 4G LTE no Brasil. 4G LTE no Brasil (Vivo, Claro e TIM) usa banda 7. O iPhone EUA não suporta banda 7. O iPhone 5s da Europa (França, Alemanha, Espanha) suporta banda 7. Você deve comprar a versão Europa para 4G LTE no Brasil.

All conditions matched. No worries then, i guess. Thank you very much.

Eu sei, mas eu mal uso o 3G direito, então não estou tão desesperado pelo 4G.

I googled "iphone imei checkers" and entered in pratically all sites from the first page, but most of them are just useless, don't waste your time with them. However, i found this one that at least showed me the phone was unlocked

Entendi. Eu viajo ao Brasil muitas vezes por ano. Brasil não tem 4G para pré-pago. Somente para o contrato, então eu não preciso do iPhone da Europa.

Just back from the local Apple store. Went there to get an unlocked 5s. They said they don't sell them unlocked. I asked if I bought a contract-free phone whether it would be unlocked. They said that's up to me to figure it out...it's not something that they will support. A bit bummed. Why does Apple play these games? The rep said I could buy the phone and if it doesn't work out, return it. I don't want to go through that hassle.

I'm concerned there may be a recent change. Has anyone bought the contract-free T-Mobile phone from an Apple store? Is it unlocked?

Otherwise, I'm thinking maybe I should just switch to T-Mobile. Their simple plan looks pretty nice with free international data and texting when I travel. Only issue is with coverage and download speeds. They probably won't be as good as AT&T.

That's an understatement. At least for me it was, going with T-Mobil from Verizon than back to Verizon within just a few hours experiencing the worst coverage outside of Sprints. Luckily I found a great Verizon rep that brought me back step by step, not losing anything like ETF, Activation and getting my old number back. Took about 58 minutes, but well worth it.

T-Mobil in my area (Dunedin, Florida) has a way to go to get good coverage. Your mileage may vary, but ask others with T-Mobil to check the speed tests for your area, call quality (Crackling sound for me) and whether you can get on the internet or not at locations you visit.

Download speeds went from 33MB with verizon, and down to less that 2 MB from time to time with T-Mobil, and most of the time in the kb range where I could not even run the Speed tests. Not good

All "device only" purchases of AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon iPhone 5s from the Apple retail store are unlocked. The employees are told not to tell you that. So never ask for unlocked in the store. Ask for device only.

Go back to the store and request either of the 3 versions "device only" and it will be unlocked.

Why the unnecessary confusion with the 5s when they clearly state the device is unlocked for the 5c?

And to think, this entire time, I was right all along.

The REAL unlocked version has arrived.

The funny thing is, if you went out and got the T-Mobile version and wanted to trade that for the SIM-Free version. You can't, you're stuck with T-Mobile.

The only real unlocked version remains the Verizon model. You can take that version and use it on any carrier, except Sprint. This so called unlocked version from Apple will not work on Verizon or Sprint as neither carrier will allow it on their network. So don't bother with the Apple unlocked version and buy a no contract verizon model instead.

^ The good thing about that is that CDMA carriers are on their way out, or will convert to GSM, one or the other.

You'd never want to be a part of a CDMA carrier, as they're slow and run down your battery.

It does not drain your battery any faster. They are also not slow on LTE. Plus LTE already uses GSM. Again, the best unlocked iphone 5s to get right now in the Verizon model.

When I had the iPhone 5, I was on 3G, (forced) with a CDMA carrier and my battery was sweating bullets.

Either way, even if one had that Verizon model that was dual CDMA and GSM. You can't move onto a CDMA carrier without flashing the phone, which isn't possible.

As far as the battery thing goes, I have found that it DOES depend on the carrier and their reception.

When I was on AT&T, my battery life would be down to 40-50% after just 9 hrs or so. Verizon was no better.

Finally switched over to T-Mobile and my battery life improved to 2-2.5 days. with 4.5-5 hrs usage.

I also noticed the same thing on my Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 and iPad Mini. On the Nexus 7, I would take it to work using my AT&T data sim and the battery would drop down to 60% after six hours with 20 minutes usage. With T-Mobile, two days with 5 hrs usage.

Verizon model is still the best model. I get 2 days battery life with my Verizon iphone 5s on verizon. Having the verizon model give you more options. You want to go to AT&T or T-mobile, no problem just swap sim cards. Want to take your t-mobile, AT&T or Apple unlocked iphone 5s and use on verizon? Sorry, you are out of luck. Have the best of both worlds for the same price. Unlocked Verizon is the way to go.

Hmmm...

Not for everyone, because in a few months, Verizon will be getting rid of CDMA. It will be a thing of the past. Just a heads up.

Until then, yes, the dual function of the Verizon model is unique.

It will not be getting rid of CDMA soon. Yes, they are going to switch to VoLTE, but that will take a few years. Please don't spread false rumors. In a few months they will NOT force people off CDMA.

But isn't it that if you're using a CDMA model, you can't talk and surf at the same time...?
