Apple live Chat:
Yes, when you travel internationally, you can use a local GSM nano sim card for a local carrier.

Apple live Chat:Yes, the Tmobile model would need to be activated at the local Apple Store, Tmobiel store or by calling Tmobile

Apple live Chat:The Tmobile iPhone 5s would need to be activated with the Tmobile sim. You would then be able to use it internationally with another GSM compatible sim.

Apple live Chat:To use an iPhone unlocked with other US carriers, you would need the sim free unlocked model.

Apple live Chat:recommend checking with your local Apple Store for the availability of the unlocked sim free model.

Me:aha and the T-mobile isn't simfree

Apple live Chat:Correct, that model comes with the Tmobile sim preinstalled

Me:but it's work with international carries as well

Apple live Chat:Yes, that is correct.

I've been following this thread since I noticed the "unlocked" part had been removed from the website.

I ordered two "iPhone 5s 64GB Space Gray (GSM) T-Mobile, Unlocked" online 3.05am EST and that's what it says in my confirmation email. However, it just says "t-mobile" when I login online to view my order.

I'm also in line at the 5th ave store in NYC. It's still about an hour until they open, but if anyone who has already bought a t-mobile phone in a physical store could confirm whether it's locked to t-mobile of not that would be much appreciated.

Online it still says that the phone works with international domestic carriers. It also does not say that it is locked to a carrier like it says for the ones above. Maybe this suggests that Apple simply don't want to advertise that it is unlocked, like someone above mentioned?

You don't know how deep it gets. That's the point, that's the thing! Even if it says in bold letters that your phone is unlocked. It's still not unlocked due to carriers cockamamie policies.

You will find out the hard way.

The ONLY reason I'm even buying an iPhone 5S is because I didn't get an unlocked iPhone 5 9 months ago.

And now, they're not even selling the unlocked version so there's nothing the hell I can do.

Unlocked is becoming a marketing term to get you to buy, BUT ITS JUST NOT TRUE.

Hmm, when you go to add the T-mobile iPhone 5s to the cart, it still says "iPhone 5s 64GB Silver (GSM) T-Mobile Unlocked
Purchase Information
$849.00"

So based on that it seems that you can't use it on an international carrier out of the box.

People will not fully understand until they experience the hour long arguments with the carriers about getting their phones unlocked.

It won't happen.

"Apple Specialists" and "T-Mobile Specialists" have no control over that like you think they do.

You think you can get a carrier phone unlocked? Easier said than done, good luck, you're gonna need it.

Apple really screwed up the T-Mobile unlocked phone. It seems that no one really knows what's going on with that phone but I'd expect a lot of returns if the phone isn't unlocked.

The fact that they "recommend checking with your local Apple Store for the availability of the unlocked sim free model."
just shows how clueless and out of the loop they are.

It's 8AM EST, stores should be open by now. someone please keep us posted on what you discover. Is it truly unlocked?

I'm about to be let into the 5th ave store any minute now. I'll keep you guys posted.

So, I'm still in line but managed to talk to the store manager.

Me:
There's been a lot of confusion about the unlocked phone in the past hours, especially online. What's the deal?

His answer:
I know, but don't worry. It will be unlocked from start if you buy it at full price here.

Me:
So if I buy it I will be able to use it directly with t-mobile, AT&T and international carriers?

Him:
Yes, don't worry.

I'll confirm this once I've actually tried it with my AT&T and Swedish (Telia) SIM cards.

I can now confirm to everyone here that I had no problem buying two unlocked black 64gb iPhone 5S at the Apple Store on 5th Ave in NYC. They work with my US AT&T sim card as well as my Swedish Telia SIM card.

Ordered mine last nite. It says "T-Mobile, UNLOCKED" so I'm expecting it to be unlocked with just a t-mobile simcard pre-installed.

Awesome! Did they come with a T-Mobile SIM you had to remove or were they sim-less?

Was it a tmobile unlocked phone? Did it have a tmobile sim in the phone?

Was it T mobile?

The woman I spoke to seemed certain it was unlocked.

pictures pleaseeeeeee. that would probably put an end to this discussion. You didn't have to ask apple to activate or call T-Mobile right?

Found this on the live chat page. I believe that the fact that the apple specialist didn't say that the unlocked iPhone 5s wasn't available now probably indicates something. What I personally think is that apple may not be selling the unlocked version right now in the store due to limited supply and they want to sell the carrier models first, but if you order online, the phone will be shipping directly from china in a different batch and thus coming unlocked.
