You have to go into Apple the store to do anything for T-Mobile.

Sure you can. Just choose the T-Mobile carrier option during checkout or the "Buy a contract-free iPhone" in the store app.

This is true if you are trying to any kind of an upgrade, but if you are buying a full price phone, then you can pre-order it tonight.

T-Mobile's market share is like 15% so the vast majority of people commenting about T-Mobile aren't on it and have no clue what they are talking about. So don't panic - you'll be able to order a phone.
