Rollout is actually quicker than you think. There was a thread on this a while back, OP, this may be a good read.

There won't be any problems if you don't care about Band 71/the future of better indoor coverage. Existing coverage will still be around, but they are rolling out fast, and have been rolling out.
 
I’m on T-mobile and I plan to buy an X. Band 71 will not go live here in LA until 2019 so I’ll keep the X for 2 years then upgrade in 2019. Check out this spectrum map.
