I see a lot of posts saying service was as bad or worse than expected. Very few, if any, that state they were pleasantly surprised. I wonder if this promo might be hurting T-Mobile more than helping.

I like the idea of cutting my phone bill almost in half but there's a reason why AT&T and Verizon costs more.

Cricket.

ATT Towers. TMo pricing, or less, for me and for a number of people here at work.

Isn't Cricket throttled to 8 mbps max by ATT now?
Yes. Which I laugh at since that is entirely a joke.

It's faster than many home broadband connections. It's far more than necessary to stream 2.8 mbps YouTube HD videos (which their app doesn't even allow over cellular). So it's not hurt me even the least little bit. Not sure why they even bothered.

So I guess, if the SpeedTest.net app is your primary reason for having an iPhone... might be a big deal.

I have checked those other sites. They don't provide too much information in my area. If the bars indicate voice coverage, I guess I'll get pretty poor coverage then. I get 1 bar, maybe 2 at best. But lately I've been seeing a lot of no service. As for career update, I have version 16.1. Not sure how to force an update to rewrite over it.

16.1 is the same carrier update that I have. I know that they have a 16.1.1 version floating around as well, but it does not seem that T-Mobile widely deployed that version.

I dunno. I don't see any downside to this for T-Mobile. The company's network has never been as extensive as Verizon or AT&T, and people seeing bad coverage in their area would simply confirm the perception that's been out there. However, those that see new and improved coverage are now much more likely to switch if they'd been on the fence about T-Mobile. And on other threads, I've seen a fair number of posts to this effect.

The test drive is simply an opportunity to test T-Mobile's network without any commitments or up front payments. Even if the test drive doesn't result in someone switching, a little bit of goodwill can go a long way. The network is just about the only good thing I hear about Verizon.

The test drive is also a promo for the iPhone, because T-Mobile currently has the lowest iPhone penetration rate among the major carriers. No better way to see what the iPhone can do than to actually use it.

I think it depends on where you live. I just switched to the 5S w/ LTE from a non LTE android phone. My speed tests are in the upper 30s. My buddy w/ the same phone on Verizon hit 6mbps. I don't plan on driving across country ever or living in the boonies, so Tmobile has really worked well for me. If the rumors are true and you can add up to 10 lines, I'll save more money by consolidating our 2 plans. I'm a huge fan of T-Mo

For me personally, I have large files I need to get from work at a moments notice. If I can cut the time I need to download those to a fraction it more than pays for the $10-$20 a month. One of the reasons why I am leaving sprint and going to T-mobile or ATT.

To your point, I dont think it makes a big difference to the average consumer that's streaming youtube or spotify 99.9% of the time. Just providing perspective on what the extra bit every month gets you and why someone would choose that premium.

On another note, I should hopefully get my test drive kit tonight or tomorrow morning (if my leasing office cooperates). Will post back with results and thoughts. I have fairly high hopes given my location and t-mobiles strength around here

I looked at the RootMetrics map for my area (Tampa/St. Petersburg FL), and Verizon is definitely better according to that. Mostly green across the whole area, versus T-Mobile which shows more orange and red spaces. And unfortunately that's the experience I had with them during a few weeks with one of their sim cards. Sometimes great, sometimes just poof nothing. So I guess for now I'll stick to Verizon. But I will keep a watch out if their service improves.

It's tempting to switch. Voice and data at the same time, hd voice, more control over conference calls, unlimited everything includes 5 gigs of hotspot for 80 bucks. Fast as *******. No contract

My verizon plan is 450 min, unl text and data for 79 with my advance auto employee discount. Verizon's 3G, somehow, is usually worse than tmobile edge. I'm talking like .10 Mbps

I got my test drive tonight and things are even better than I could have hoped for. I had the luxury of being able to test all 4 major carriers on iPhones at the same time and place (3 5s, 1 5). The 5 was on Verzon for perspective. I ran tests with LTE on and LTE off. In every test in my apartment the T-mobile 5s came in first for download speed. Upload speed was really a toss up between everyone but Sprint. Call quality was good on all 4 platforms, so nothing to report there. Unfortunately I do not own the ATT or Verizon phones, so I will not be able to compare them directly in this way at work tomorrow. Overall quite impressed with T-Mobile so far. I will see how my drive to work and actual signal at work is. Anything is an improvement from Sprint, and T-Mobile is definitely making a compelling argument for me and my uses.

I haven't had my test drive yet - I'm putting in for a device tomorrow, well, later today (it's late...). I'm using 3 lines of VZW, with two iPhone 5 handsets and an iPad Air - all with UL data. I'm in Portland OR. My brother lives in Sitka AK and travels here every two weeks, and has two iPhone 5S handsets - both with GCI (ATT) and UL data - he's tired of throttling when he's here in PDX.

I've noticed when we're traveling in CA and here in the PNW, our iPhones will hold on to an LTE signal until it's basically gone - and then latch onto the next antenna array. We've learned to disable LTE when we're out and about in fringe areas so I'm on EVDO and he's on HSPA - and our battery life is better and data works better.

Have any of you disabled LTE on the test drive phones when indoors and noticed a difference in data and signal stability? I'm wondering? I'm staging a short road trip around when the test drive iPhone lands in my mailbox. Thanks in advance!

T-Mobile's problem isn't outdoor coverage. I had wonderful LTE coverage outside; the problem was indoor coverage. The signal almost always dropped down to H+, then to EDGE which was unacceptable.

DOES WIFI CALLING MAKE UP FOR DIFFERENCE?

Don't forget about WiFi calling coming in iOS8... For those situations where at home it is bad and everywhere else is good it is a lifesaver... I'm actually surprised it wasn't good for them in Tampa... I've been all over Tampa, Lakeland and Wesley chapel and get LTE pretty much everywhere.

Sorry for the bump. How does your iPhone 6 work on T-Mobile's network in the Tampa Bay area now?

I just signed up for the Test Drive but I wanted to see if you had feedback.

Thanks

I gave it a try last week. I didn't have high hopes after viewing the coverage map. Even ATT and Verizon don't have great signal here. It took 3 days before I got service and the "welcome to tmobile" text message.

Regardless, I was happy they provided the test drive program. No real loss for either side. Unfortunately, it just didn't work out in my case.

Where in the world are you? Would it be worth it to buy a network extender for your house or is this coverage a problem EVERYWHERE where you now live?

I live in Tampa Bay Area with an iPhone 6+ and have T-Mobile prepaid, and I've been very happy so far. I drive from Land O Lakes down to St. Petersburg every day as my commute and stream music, video, etc in the car just fine.
