The service should be free. Don't see any reason to have a $5 charge or any amount for that matter. Looks like other carriers will do the same when they support it. Don't know when it will be available in my country.

I'm in the minority here I guess. I have a 17 Pro, and a 13 mini. It will be great to be able to share the same number between both phones. I tried the T-mobile Digits and it worked horribly. I'm not thrilled about the $5/month fee, but it beats having even a cheap seperate line, and having to negotiate 2 phone numbers for texts and calls.

So, does anyone know how we sign up?

Probably need to wait for iOS 27 to officially release first 😉

I'm sure they're figuring out how to change that. There is also a limit to the number of times you can do it before they make you call in and get a new one. Mint lets you transfer 4 times a year for free. Not sure what T-Mobile's current policy is.
Wild work, I would call and flip out if they try to charge for swapping esims, since we don’t have a choice anymore

$5 is a gift, think about the eSIM era Verizon doesn’t support moving your eSIM to another phone unless you pay $25 each time.

Technically it likely costs them very little but they do have to maintain both devices on the network.

They could easily charge $10-15 or more like they do for a second number.

Moving the eSIM means only that device is active and not two devices simultaneously. If you rock your pro max during the day and use your air or duo at night just grab the phone and go.

I’m sure if you’re dual phoning it’s worth it.

Personally I prefer iPhone and iPad. But I am adding in a duo, eventually, to serve as a consolidation, giving iPhone and iPad a break when I can but I’ll never have all 3 at once in use, only 1 or two, is the plan. I’ll probably go back to T-Mobile when I do get my duo to take advantage of hand off. Wish it was free and not limited to carrier. Maybe something Apple can build into the modem.

I have so many mixed feelings about this. One part of me understands your side of this. And the other part of me thinks it's completely nonsense that the US allows corporations to pull crap like this on consumers.

I'd really like to know just how much of an impact handoff has on T-Mobile's side that they can justify charging a fee for it. Does it actually require resources on their end? I guess it could cause an increase in support calls when issues arise.

IDK. Just really rubs me the wrong way. And I'm not even a T-Mobile customer.

Yes, this probably falss into the "thye charge it because they can" category. Like someone else said, T-Mobile charges a $35 fee when you upgrade your phone, and charge if you buy in store instead of online. I veiw T-Mobile now as the "Don't bug me!" company. Nothing is included or considered the "Cost of doing business". You pay a lot for your lines, then get nickel and dime'd for every little thing afterwards. It all add up. People wonder why their bill is so high after being with a phone carrier for a few years???

Anyway, this is $5/month I am willing to pay.

I’m hoping this is the reason why we still have physical SIM cards in the UK: you can swap as many times as you like for free!

Why arent you explaining how to OPT OUT OF IT in the set up process? Like for instance in your article yesterday you showed steps how to activate it but you havent showed steps how to not activate it when u set up the new phone. Give us step by step how to ignore the option when setting up the phone.
Wouldn't you just... not opt in during setup? Are you assuming this will be opt-in by default? It most certainly will not be.
