I have my grandfathered plan from AT&T and have been extremely happy. I just hope it never goes away.

But you have to wake up every morning fearing that it will be taken away, or fearing that they'll go the way of VZ and take it away with your next upgrade.

I'm confused. What is considered a grandfathered plan? Is it one that they no longer offer anymore but people are still signed up for? The $30 prepaid plan won't be going away will it?

Grandfathered as in plans you have and are allowed to keep, but new customers are not able to sign up for.

Wiki: exempt (someone or something) from a new law or regulation.
"smokers who worked here before the ban have been grandfathered"

My AT&T contract has just expired and I am heading to T-Mobile for a no contract SIM card. I'll keep my iPhone4S and will upgrade to the iPhone 6 if it's amazing. I have the lowest plan on AT&T but unlimited calls, texts and up to 500MB of data for $45 is the winner.

Why not just use straight talk unlimited (2.5gb then throttled) unlimited calls and texts, also for $45 and also on the ATT network with no contract? The plan you have is definitely nothing amazing.

I would switch over but unfortunately TMO doesn't offer LTE in my area...their signal actually isn't all that great for the friends of mine that have them.

If their coverage were great, they wouldn't be offering these great deals. I can't believe people fall for this BS. T-Mobile is only going to seem great while they are trying to build up their customer base.

Their coverage is fine for MOST people. It's just the whiny ones who don't live in their footprint that talk down about them. It's the same mentality as back when Sprint was all digital and VZ had digital and Analog and covered the rural areas... now everyone is all digital and people who live in the sticks feel the need to whine that T-Mo doesn't spend money to cover their 1 per mile population density.

----------

Thats exactly what I was thinking... So unfair how expensive everything is here.

Huh? Here for 6.5GB of data with 250 minutes it'd be over $100 a month at today's rates. How is this so expensive?

New SIM card

Someone at the T-Mobile store in Santa Barbara, CA replaced the SIM card on my iPhone 5 and I now get better reception.

That's not to say that reception problems are gone, but not as bad as before.

It seems they are currently upgrading the antennas so things are looking up for T-Mobile.

Go to:
appledatabase.com
or
http://unlockiphoneatt.com

Get your iphones unlocked and switch to T Mobile.

They're mainly doing this to get people off their old plans that still use subsidized upgrades. Plus there are still a lot of customers who use flip phones on very old Suncom era rate plans that are cheaper than anything tmobile currently offers. I'm surprised by the fact that they will give them lower rate plans to compensate for forcing them out of those plans. That's really nice.

already switched months ago.

Went from 1000 voice + 1000 text + unlimited EDGE for $56 to unlimited voice + text + 500Meg 4G LTE (unlimited 3G thereafter) for $50...

nice...

(my old 3GS is slow anyways... ;) )

So they're taking away unlimited to give back....unlimited??
No, what they are doing is taking away things like:
Fave 5 plans
Limited Minute Plans
Mobile to Any-mobile Minutes
T-Mobile to T-Mobile minutes
Night and Weekend Minutes
Extended Night and Weekend Minutes
Plans for calling at a reduced rate to Canada and Mexico

The list goes on and on as to the plans that they have had over the years.

What they are offering in exchange is a current plan, which is:
  • Unlimited Talk, Text & Web (High Speed is throttled after a certain cap, base on the plan you choose, but you never pay extra)
  • $0.20 per minute to call over 100 countries and for voice roaming in those countries
  • Unlimited text and data in over 100 countries, yes the data will be slow, but it will be there.

All for the same price or less than what the grandfathered plans are charging.

As for coverage, I often find that my wife can get coverage with T-Mobile where I have none with AT&T, there is only ONCE in recent memory where the reverse has been true.

But since there are no contracts forcing people to stay with them, T-Mobile must keep up this new level of service or people will simply leave.

I also think that many missed the fact that T-Mobile is also offering the option to cancel with no penalty through Feb. of next year. Yes, you could probably have gotten out of a contract within 30 days of the change, but they are giving much longer than that. I think that speaks volumes towards the integrity of the company.

Yep, but naysayers will cry that something is afoul and how T-Mo coverage was bad 10 years ago (the last time they personally experienced them). Apple was good, then sucked, and now is good again. Companies can change, and just because HP sucks at making laptops doesn't mean Apple laptops will automatically suck

Would consider the $30 plan if I weren't in the "satisfactory" zone (aka barely a bar on a good day). 100 feet down my street the dead zone starts. Would love to get away from Att and Vz.

I bought wall mart TMobile family plan, unlimited text, data, talk for $40. But with tax and fees, I pay $47. Signal isn't that great... I wonder if i should change my plan to this actual TMobile ? My "my touch" phone was like $150.

This is so true

The US carriers are scam artists and oligopolies and the government should spend some time investigating these monstrosities instead of being shut down.

As I live in Europe, (but am originally a US-er), I am always dumbfounded by the high rates and poor plans that US carriers offer. Monopolies, they are.

And to think AT&T almost bought them out.

I'm so glad that was stopped in its tracks. Anyone think AT&T will eventually see how T-Mobile is starting to kick their asses, and lower prices/improve services?

You can say that again! This deal falling apart was the best thing that ever happened to the mobile phone consumer, and for that we have to thank Sprint.

Now T-Mobile is kicking not only big carriers butts, but also smaller carriers (StraightTalk, Net10, AIrVoice) are offering significantly better value and more transparent terms and conditions, so thank you T-Mobile too.

Verizon and AT&T, go stand in the corner, face the wall.

do you immediately just play the devils advocate to be annoying, or do you have a reason for saying that? because t-mobile and at&t are nearly identical in terms of service (unless you live in the woods in minnesota or south dakota or something) and if they're offering unlimited services for 45 bucks, there is absolutely -zero- reason to not switch from at&t to t-mobile. I've used both carriers extensively throughout the east coast.

The grass may not be greener on the other side.

$45 a month? Are you kidding? I pay $70 a month in canada and get 6gb lte and only 250 daytime mins, unlimited text and vm.

what carrier are you on? this actually sounds very good by Canadian standards (which are admittedly awful). I'm planning to buy an iphone and I can't find anything even close to that. For example, to get 6GB on Rogers you have to shell out 120$ a month.

T-Mobile is awesome!

Now if they only had coverage and access to non-terrible frequencies that bounce right off buildings!

Damn. Is that what is happening to me? I switched to T-Mobile for the good reasons but my coverage in my cubicle in the center of my building is noticeably worse than what I had with Verizon. It goes from 1 bar to 2 to 3 to No service to 4G, etc... I don't see the rhyme or reason. I don't even notice until I try to send a text and it does not go through.

Not sure I understand the Straight Talk deal. Why would AT&T allow that? Looking at their web site it is like you basically get the $60 AT&T plan on AT&T network but for $45 / month with slight discounts for paying up front and no contract. Why would anyone stay on an AT&T contract with that avaialbe? I am not bashing AT&T, I honestly don't understand this.

As an optimist, I really hope that the influx of new customers shows that they have a viable plan and they use the new cash to further upgrade their systems bringing more customers, etc...etc... then total cell domination!!! Then they probably give gigantic payouts to their executives and start screwing customers to give more bonuses to new executives etc...etc... :(

Has anyone gotten a letter yet? I haven't and I'm dying to know what my new rate would be. I have a small biz plan that has 1000 mins/unlimited text/unlimited data for $40. I'm guessing they would put me on the one mentioned in the letter, unlimited all for $45, which I don't like cause I don't need the minutes and would rather not pay more.

But then again its still a great deal so I guess I shouldn't complain!

This has always been the model of MVNOs. They are wholesale customers of the carriers. Usually the carriers put them in a one-step-behind technology (Straight talk didn't get iPhone till later, Straight talk didn't get LTE till very much later).

Even though they have it now, there are noticeable differences. ST forbids tethering, streaming, etc. AT&T doesn't care what you do with your data. Straight Talk doesn't have visual voicemail, and since it's not an official carrier, the experience isn't as seamless as ATT. Nonetheless, it's the same network.

And yeah, I realize there are ways around several of the issues, so stop piping in telling me I'm wrong. For the average user, you pay less but you're getting less, be it customer service, or technology both fall short compared to ATT's direct buying experience.

But for the price it's a BARGAIN!

My feelings exactly - it's a great carrier, with practically cult-like customer service, but I always lose coverage inside many buildings where folks who have ATT and Verizon do not. Ditto for when I'm out and about driving.

Sufficient for my needs, but at times irritating. Hopefully the LTE rollout will take some of this into account as their network grows.
