Silly question....keep my Verizon #?

My girlfriend is tired of her Verizon phone and I've talked her into going the GSM route (we travel internationally and swap sims constantly), she just has one question.......

Can she keep her Verizon phone # if she goes after this tmobile iphone5?

Thanks for your helpful responses!

I was about to buy it, but apparently they only offer the 16GB iPhone, which becomes useless after installing a few apps and taking a few pics and videos...

Does anybody know how to get the other models through T-Mobile?

You have to order it online.

So, 9:00AM PDT and no T-Mobile software upgrade. Not an auspicious roll-out!

sure you can transfer over.

only prepaid numbers are not transferable - I think.

I thought the T-Mobile software update was for the April 5th version of the iPhone 5 which won't be in the customers hand until April 12th.

You can transfer it but don't cancel your Verizon service before you activate your T-Mobile service. The current phone number has to be active in order to be able to transfer it or you loose it.

I don't know about right now, but I placed my order around 12:20am (midnight) Pacific Time and all were available, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB in Black and White

I plan to buy it from Apple so I can keep my $30 prepaid plan (100 min voice, unlimited text, 5gb of 4G data). If I buy it from TMo, I think I have to get the $50-$70 plan which I don't want. I'm all about texts and data, and the $30 plan is perfect for me (although it's getting harder and harder to find it on their site)

They have the 32GB and 64GB models on their site, too. http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/?capcode=ios

Thanks, I was looking through a different link before, that's why I couldn't find it.

For those who pre-ordered from T-Mobile's website, what method of shipping did you use ?

I just spoke with T-Mobile, and was told the units will ship ON April 12th... So, if you choose UPS Ground... It'll be at least another 5 business days to get the device. There's no sense in paying $25 for overnight!!

So, what option did you choose ?

I'm thinking just going to the store on the 12th... Looking to buy the 32GB Black

How is T-Mobile able to sell the iPhone for so cheap?

T-Mobile: $579
Apple: $649

AT&T and Verizon rape their customers (your "free" phone only costs you $1,000 a year), and T-Mobile basically gives you $80 for free. That obviously isn't helping their profits.

How are you paying 1,000 a year for a free phone?

All you pay is your service amount and that's not for the phone (well not entirely) because it will be the same price even if you bring your own phone

So about 4 to 5 months... I'm seriously considering waiting for the newer version, but I don't know if I could handle my current phone anymore.
The p.o.s. HTC Android junk calls out and plays music on its own.

I'd say so.. Remember how iP4 was introduced at Verizon first too, in January and 4S in October. There was 8 months between them.

If I purchase an iPhone from Tmobile for full price. How do I get it unlocked? I figure this is the way to upgrade from a 16GB to a 32GB. Also, I assume I can get applecare for it. Is that right?

That's what I want to do as well, but I pre-ordered the phone from T-Mobile with the $50 plan, then I will call and switch to the $30 pre-paid plan (I asked them and they said you can do this). I'll have to pay $20 more the first month, but the phone is $80 cheaper, so I still save like $60.

meanwhile at T-Mobile in Germany ;)

OK, let me compare apples and oranges. I assume an exchange rate of €1 is $1.3 , I will round numbers to the next full Euro, and since you did not post a link to the offer I will go with this one: http://www.t-mobile.de/tarife/0,10821,17773-_2581,00.html

- Monthly payments are €40/$52 only for people younger than 25, otherwise it is €50/$65
- After 200MB you get slowed down to 2G
- Calling other German cell phone providers (Vodafone, O2, ePlus etc.) is NOT free. Texting outside t-mobile Germany is €0.20/$0.26.
- You DO have a 2 year commitment
- The price of the iPhone 16GB is €165/$214.5, and this does not include the €30/$39 installment fee.
(http://www.t-mobile.de/T-D1/cds/Sho...66,251598-CNC-1-0-,00.html?tab=Fr junge Leute)
- Coverage is better in Germany
- Taxes are included in German offer
- There is an online rebate of 10% for the first year

IMHO it depends on your profile to tell which offer is better. So what was your point?

Thanks for your helpful responses!

Yes she can. I did that (moved from AT&T to Sprint), it's the law.

Here is how: She does not need to contact Verizon at all herself. All she needs to do is get her phone from T-Mobile, and call T-mobile to activate. T-Mobile will ask her if she wants to activate with a new line or transfer a line from another carrier, she should let them know. They will ask her for her phone number and some info (account number, etc...)

When I transfered to Sprint, the sales rep conferences an AT&T rep and I confirmed my intension to move carriers. AT&T thanked me for being a customer and said they will send the final bill in a billing cycle.

Hung up, two minutes later my AT&T iPhone got 'No Serv'ce, my Sprint iPhone got service, and that was it.

The whole thing typically takes less than 20 minutes. Porting itself takes 2 to 2 business days to complete.

ADVICE: Have her transfer her number and activate the service very close to the billing cycle end. One of the mistakes I did was transfer my number one week in my billing cycle, AT&T charged me the whole month. At the same time, don't wait the last day of the billing cycle, give it at least a week or so. So I say have her change 3 weeks into her billing period.

Good luck

"data is slowed to 2G speeds once the customer reaches 500 MB for the month"
So that's pretty much useless.

I have read online that both the 32GB and 64GB models are only available online.

That's a really great idea! Plus I like that I don't have to come up with $650 upfront and have the option to do monthly payments instead. Someone in another thread had the same idea, but is just going to cancel the new plan and put the sim card that's on the $30 plan in. Saves a phone call anyway, which always tends to be a pain in the butt :p

"data is slowed to 2G speeds once the customer reaches 500 MB for the month"
So that's pretty much useless.

Well, at least you get 500MB free for whatever reason you may need it.
If you want to add 2GB for a total of 2.5GB, just pay $10 more per month.
Keep in mind that either 500MB or 2.5GB include tethering.
By far a much better deal than the other carriers.

My plan was grandfathered in. $35 for 500 minutes talk and $5 for 200MB data.
I don't download video, just basic web/maps, so saving $120/year is well worth losing 300MB/month that I would never use!

And the nice thing is if I ever do want to upgrade my data plan, I'll get 4.5GB and pay the same price as new customers will have to pay to get only 2.5GB! :D

Existing T-Mobile customers should go through the my.t-mobile upgrade shop instead of the front page pre-order ad.

Can't believe I just saw "down payment" for a phone. Next thing you know, we'll have to start taking out bank loans for these things.

Remind me again how much 4 liters (1 gallon) of gas costs in Germany :D

----------

Add Sprint to your list as well. Not to mention there is no early termination fee at T-Mobile. I am really looking forward to switching from Sprint (and there slower then modem data speeds) to T-Mobile.

Gas is actually pretty cheap in Germany compared to other countrys in Europe ( Holland, France )

This is what they do with AT&T, let the contract pay the phone back, it's also lending money for a phone..

I'm on the same plan. I would assume you could just swap the sim...

----------

I bought mine from Apple since its factory unlocked and I don't have to bother calling a carrier to unlock it. Also, if the phone needs to get swapped out, a new unlock request doesn't need to be put in for the replacement phone...Apple just replaces it with another unlocked one.

Plus, the 30 day return policy Apple has is great.

if you have an unlocked iPhone replaced, you will get an unlocked iPhone. it doesn't matter if it came that way or the carrier did it.

----------

will this work with an att sim?

yes, if you pay it off t-mobile will unlock it and it will work with any GSM carrier SIM.
