for what I read on engadget this will be a phone that supports AWS for their 3G networks must likely a different model or perhaphs a firmware update can activate AWS for UMTS (3G) use?

It is locked to t-mobile

Nothing new here folks. it just a different installment plan.

If you are not going to upgrade every 24 months this will benefit otherwise it is same as ATT, verizon and everyone else.

I was hoping for unlocked iPhone from the get go, so disappointed.

buy an unlocked iPhone and take it over there then. They're more than happy with that it seems.

This question has been lingering for a while.

Sign up with the payment plan, cancel 1 month later. obviously T-Mobile would expect you to either return the phone, or pay the full unsubsidized value (reduced by the amount already paid) of the device.

Isn't that a "contract" ?

Yes, just like Financing your car is a contract with the finance company until you paid the very last penny.

The difference is though if you are one of those who like to upgrade every year, you won't get screwed with hundreds of dollars of termination fees. And if you don't mind holding on to your phone for a few more months, you save hundreds.

They'll unlock it if either a) paid in full up front or b) once it is paid off. What, were you expecting it to be unlocked with only a down payment?

dude, i have done that too, really there is not much difference between t-mobile others once the phone locked to the carrier until it is paid off.

there are lots of us, who are happy to be in the contract/installment plan still want to have unlocked iPhone for overseas trips.

No - you don't have to buy the phone at TMobile, as long as your phone is unlocked and will work on their network. Verizon phones won't work on TMobile's network though.

It's UNLIMITED, just the speeds are slower. Just like you can use your car to drive UNLIMITED miles on 30mph roads or 65mph roads. The speed has nothing to do with the UNLIMITED part.

TMobile's network is a LOT slower than both AT&T's and Verizon's. You will notice the difference coming from those carriers, and rue the day you switched.

There is a credit check to sign up, yes. And, it's basically a 0% loan if you want to look at it that way.

Actually the Verizon iPhone 5 does work on T-Mobile's network, but only up to 3G (in markets with 1900)

Can anybody explain to me why not having a contract is a good idea for the average person (one who generally stays with the same carrier)? It seems like if you know you are going to stay with the same carrier, a contract is a good thing. The only way the Tmobile plan saves you money is if you keep a device longer than 2 years. But for most people, it is preferable to sell your device after your two years and have your upgrade paid for.

Within the two years, the costs for ATT vs Tmobile are very similar:

because I still have to pay even i remove the t-mobile plan (similar to ATT, Verizon termination fees except it is in monthly plan).

If I am fulfilling my obligation why it is still locked?

I think it is controlled by Apple not by t-mobile or att. may be US Govt will do something about these locking. it is different topic altogether.

Props to Verizon's marketing department. Tmobile's new business model is now a threat to the big 2. Tmobile's network has actually improved considerably in the last year, esp their reframing strategy

The only way this is a threat is if people start jumping ship for tmobile in droves. I just don't see that happening. Their network just isn't good enough IMO. Tmobile has always been the cheaper option and they've been supporting iPhone users officially for years, just not selling the phones. The number one thing you read about tmobile is "great customer service but crappy network".

For what it's worth people said the same things about att when verizon got the iPhone. Things didn't really change. At all.

The biggest news and biggest surprise regarding this announcement is the fact that this iPhone supports Tmobile AWS bands. I was afraid of how poor the hspa coverage would've been if they were solely relying on the refarmed network areas.

So $70/month unlimited everything? can I take my unlocked iPhone 5 there on 4/12 and sign up for this as a prepaid plan, or do I have to commit to a contract?
I don't know if it's because I'm already a T-mobile customer (with my unlocked iPhone 5), but the plan options are already available to me when I log in.

No contracts.

If you have severe ADHD like me, you switch carriers every few weeks because I get pissed off when I can't get a signal and switch to a different carrier

when was the last time you upgraded or signed a new contract threw them? if you don't mind me asking

Just buy the unlocked version from apple then and finance it, granted you will have to pay interest. You can't get everything you want. Tmobile isn't charging you interest, it's fair that they lock it. Either pay full price and get it unlocked or finance with interest an unlocked phone from apple.

But you are only comparing one data tier. What if you use more than 3gb? What if you want to tether? Tmobile comes out ahead in those cases.

Yes but you need to pay $20/month for the iPhone as well so it costs $90/month until your iPhone is payed off, then it's $70/month.

He stated he wanted to bring over his unlocked iPhone 5 after he's done with his current contract. So yes he would be at $70 a month

Never had a contract with them. I started with them last year in March when I bought an unlocked iPhone 4S. In December, I got an unlocked iPhone 5. I'm on a prepaid plan, and depending on my needs I switch back and forth between the $30 and $50 plan. The $50 plan used to only have 100 MB of 3G speed, so this new $50 plan is MUCH better.

Yes, you buy something you are expected to pay for it. Just like anything else.
