Not shore if I agree, more spectrum efficiency might enable another MNO to get in on the game at the next rf auction as the incumbents might not need to gobble up every last MHz for their own needs

I would be surprised if the big 3 let that happen. With bandwidth getting set aside for other uses, I can see them bidding for whatever gets made available. Many long time services like wireless audio getting bands limited in order to fill the demand.
