tab use in finder

i'm trying to tab back and forth from the sidebar like u can do in itunes, mail, web, contacts, etc..when i hit tab it just goes up and down the folders...am i missing something? and i know its not the all controls text box

once again this is only in finder...

That's what it does in Leopard, the only OS I can test at the moment.

The sidebar can't gain keyboard focus. If you look under the Go menu in Finder you'll find keyboard shortcuts to move yourself between a number of those items though. For other drives you can go to Computer, then the Volumes folder. Alternatively you can hit command+shift+g and enter the path of where you want to go.
