Take advantage of monitor's speakers when MBP plugged into it?

Hi,

Is it possible to take advantage of my external monitor's built in speakers when my MBP is plugged into it? (The monitor is a TV as well). If so, what sort of connector do you imagine I'd need?

If you have a new macbook pro you could use hdmi for sound and audio.

Macbook to HDMI speakers

It looks like only a MacBook made in the last 6 months or so will support sound. You need a separate audio cable. I have a MB from April of 2008 and am debating whether or not to use HDMI or VGA input. Some say there is little difference in picture.
