All warranty work/replacements are done thru Apple.
Thats what bestbuy will tell you if you go there.
And Apple has plenty of refurb iphone 3G models in stock.

Oh i did want to specify that I was in Canada.

I wonder if the Canadian stores are as well stocked as American Stores. I think I will go into the closest store and get some "info" before i take the phone in. Find out what the process if with the 3G. Then if it's in my interest to take it in, I will.....

Oh man do i feel like a bad boy pulling this!! LOL :D

Oh Canadian Apple stores?
Not sure but give it a shot and see how it goes.
But dont be surprised if they dont upgrade you to a 3GS, thats company policy.

Oh yeah, totally. I'm in no way entitled to it. It's just that you get lucky sometimes.

Never hurts to try. I will go and just talk to one of the geniuses about the process and find out if they have any 3G in stock while I'm at it.

They'll swap it out if they have any in stock. If they should still cover it since it's a hardware problem, completely unrelated to software.

Generally, the Apple Store employees won't care if it's jailbroken if it's a hardware issue. The legalese clearly states that it voids the warranty, but they don't care, and probably jailbroke their iPhone too.

There's two issues here, though. First, if the SIM tray was broken, it was probably done by you. That's "accidental damage" and they won't fix it. It's similar to dropping your phone and shattering the screen then asking them to replace it. Of course, the part costs probably $0.01, so they may fix it.

Your serial number is printed on the tray, so if you buy a new tray, the hardware display of the serial number will be lost. This is less of an issue though because it's still accessible through software, and if it really comes down to it, the serial number is printed on the phone's logic board, but most Geniuses don't know that.

Yeah i've actually already ordered a tray online. I just need someone to go into the phone and take out the piece of plastic that fell inside. I will go to an apple store this weekend and talk it out with a genius. Let's see what they say....

So, went to the Apple store and had a "chat" with the person there.

They said that if it's damage caused by you, we won't touch the phone.

How do you prove to them that it's a ****** quality tray that got stuck in the phone?? Not really my fault. (Well my fault that i pulled it out) But that's hardly considered a fault. How else was i suppose to put a SIM card in it???

Any bright ideas?

Try to be nice and polite and hope you get a cool person working.
Tell them that you didnt damage it, you were just trying to get your sim out and you had a faulty sim tray or something.
Good luck.

Yeah I wasn't rude or anything....

My post here was my frustration AFTER the store.
I'm a pretty calm person.

They actually told me to take it back to Best Buy first. Which was kinda disappointing... Apple turning you away cause you bought an Apple product back.

I will go in with the phone over the weekend and see what happens.
I'm just afraid that if i "restore" the phone to factory settings will I lose the ability to unlock in the future??

Either way they wont repair it I think we told you earlier.
They will give you another iphone so whats on this iphone makes no difference.
I dont know why they told you to go to Bestbuy, your applecare warranty is from Apple. Unless you have another warranty thru bestbuy.

Well she said if it's been less than 14 days then take it back to Best Buy and return it. (In my head I was thinking, if you guys aren't willing to fix it Best Buy would DEFINITELY say it's damaged and not return it.)

I wasn't a 100% sure if they would give me a new phone at Apple, so I wasn't sure if I was willing to take a refurb from them.

I didn't get a chance to ask her all these questions as she was multitasking and wasn't really giving me full attention.

I will go in again and talk to someone at the Genius Bar if I can.

If its damaged they will not open it up and try to fix it there. Their policy is to replace it with a refurb.
I dont know what Bestbuy will say but you can give that a shot too and if not then go to Apple.
Good luck dude.
It sucks only having it for 2 weeks and not be able to use it now.

Yeah totally... LUCKILY, it's not ME who isn't getting to use it. It's my parents. I bought it for them. I definitely can't take it to best buy cause they will return it, but they don't have another one to give me. So i'd have no phone (and at the price I paid for this, i rather just pay someone to fix it!)

So it's looking more and more like I will simply have to pay someone to fix it.

Hey , im just like you. I was stupid (not you), and bought a 3g just a week before the 16gb 3gs dropped in price to the same as my now purchased 8gb 3g:p
Anyways, get it replaced, you will get a ios 4.1 phone, but all hope is not lost.
y phone ran like a piece of $#%& until i did some "mods" to its file system.
Once you get your new 3g , remove the launch daemons
follow this guide http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=224341

i had to also change my unlocked 3g..after some "problems"

Restore the phone, and when it asks you to restore from a backup, hit "set up as new"

BTW: the iphones they have there are nt all repaired. Some are just re manufactured with reused parts, such as the gold wiring. (wait, is this a refurb?)

So will most of the 3G's in stock have a FW 4.0.2 and under? Unless they specially order one for you, the 3G's in the backroom should be from a while ago...

Your screen name fits you perfectly....lol! With that said, to answer your questions on 1, 2, and 3....."NO." Apple will NOT warranty your iPhone cause it is JB. Even though it is legal to JB your iPhone(s), Apple does not condone this so JB will VOID your warranty because it is JB and unlocked. My advice is to restore it back to factory settings if you're experiencing any issues and re-JB and unlock it afterwards. I haven't read up on the "unlock" so if you have an outside carrier and need to unlock, make sure that there is a current JB to unlock your iPhone before doing so or else you'll be stuck with an unlockable baseband and that means no phone calling for you. Hope this was a bit helpful...others on the forum may chime in but may flame you for such questions....

I took my Jailbroken iPhone into the applestore, the genius had a full on convocation to be about Jailbreaking the phone, he then wiped it before taking it in and gave me a replacemt... So not entirely true...

So I took the phone in....

The Genius was cool. he saw the phone was jailbroken and unlocked. He didn't say anything. He then opened up the phone and showed me that the pins were bent and that's why the tray got stuck. He didn't do anything about it. Just gave it all back to me and said that once i put a sim card in, it's gonna stay in for good.

I think what I will do is buy the Apple Care warranty on the phone before the year expires.

Overall the Genius was a good guy. Didn't give me too much hassel.
