Taking Bets - Custome SMS tones? Maybe? Finally???

I'd go for videogame sound effects. There's plenty of short FX that would be perfect for SMS tones.

I used to use an array of R2D2 tones for my sms... i miss them!
I JB my 1sy gen iphone but had many issues with battery and wifi etc after doinf so so i have held off on JBing my nect 2 iphones..... sms tones are such an insignificant thing in the grand picture so i don't understand people being against its inclusion in 4.0.....!

I'd definitely use star wars sms tones, or the big bad witch song from the wizard of oz when my wife texts me
This 'you will buy our product whatever we decide not to include' frame of mind is tiresome. I adore my 3GS but really struggle with Apple's attitude. Yes it's the most highly polished interface around but drip feeding BASIC features that competitors have utilised for years really takes the p#ss.

I agree. In fact, soon the experience will be so consistent that they will remove the choices altogether and we will all be using the exact same phone. Your wallpaper will be the clownfish and you messagetone will be the barking dog (Apple wants to keep the animal theme). You won't even have a ringtone anymore, only vibrations.
Keep in mind that developers already have 4.0 beta, and nobody has indicated if it's available... while there could be changes by the final release, I doubt this will be added.
It's frustrating, because our apps let you generate TEXT-TO-SPEECH custom ringtones and the most frequently requested feature is SMS tones but it's out of our hands.
I hope that Apple offers custom SMS tones for the iPhone, but I also hope that they offer customer ringer profiles, so that you could set tones for the ring, the SMS, email, and so on, or turn on or off any of the above listed sounds to fit the profile you wanted. I'm not sure if it will happen, but it really would benefit all iPhone owners should Apple decide to adopt ringtone profile customization.
