Taking your MacBook to bed

I really dislike trackpads and always have. I don't, however, really have a problem using it unless I'm playing games. I must have a mouse to do that and I'm something of a gamer so mouse space is a consideration.
i personally like the feeling of the hot aluminum against my thighs... and the smell of burning flesh. Mmmmm....
are we talking about lap rests or sex toys now

I use a ring binder which works for me just fine, or I sometimes take the keyboard tray out from my desk & sit it on that, that way I still have room for a mouse, but the other day I was using my MBP on my bed & didn't realise my power brick was between the covers- any longer & I think it could have caught fire- it was so hot I couldn't touch it

Covers Up
I usually just double the bed cover up by folding it back over itself. I then set either my 15" MacBook Pro or my 12" Powerbook directly on the covers. It gets warm sometimes, but that's no big deal. I also have a vinyl covered TV tray sort of thing with sides that turn down about 3". It works fine also.

I lie stomach-down with the laptop in front of me (on the sheets) and the mouse also on the sheets. Not the most ergonomic setup but if I wanted ergonomics then I wouldn't be playing games in bed
I also have a solution from IKEA, and that's even cheaper and comes with an additional mouse pad for bed, laps, sofas or other soft surfaces: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/66190109. I keep the bigger one under my MacBook at all time when I'm home...
You are crazy to put it directly on the bed! It's terrible for your expensive machine. It's like wrapping an engine in a blanket. Simply put it on any hard surface. I use one of those trays that's has a bean bag on the bottom and a hard tray on top. Works like a charm. Cheers, T

a simple shelf piece around 12 inches longer that the mbp/mb is ideal - thin, lightweight, super cheap and stylish.

Well, I've always monitored the temperatures when it is on my bed - the bottom does get quite warm (a lot warmer than it would if it was on my desk). The temperatures never reach more than 50'C (CPU temp) and others are about normal level.
When it is on my bed I'm usually watching a film or something so nothing intensive that would cause the CPU etc to create more heat than normal.
I wouldn't have thought that would be a problem, would it?
OK, here's what I have.
It's aluminum, so it's strong, light, and does a pretty good job at helping disipate the heat of he computer. Each leg is also independantly adjustable to help cope with irregularities in the surface it's on.

I either use nothing, or the lid to a scanner I broke awhile ago. That works great. All I have on my bed right now is a sheet set, though, as it is about a million degrees in there.
That thing is cool! If I only used the trackpad it would be a great solution. I'm going to bookmark it for future reference though; thanks for posting.

No kidding! I was just trying it out last night with my back against the wall and the tray I got sitting over my legs. It'll work for now but I will check out some of these other solutions so I don't have my arm resting on a wooden dowel the whole time.
i love my iLap. I'm so much more comfortable using that than just the macbook. And I use my computer in bed or on the couch a LOT, so it was a worthwhile investment...and that wrist pad is so nice and cushy!
