Sometimes when I’m using the phone and I get an email notification that pops up, when I tap on it it doesn’t take me to that specific email, it just takes me to my inbox. Every now and then, tapping on the notification takes me directly to the email but most of the time it just takes me to the inbox and then I have to tap on the specific email. Any idea why this happens?

Same thing happens to me

Same here. I posted about this issue a while back but got no replies, I assumed it was just me.

I also posted a more detailed post about this on Apple's support community page and got nothing either:

If you guys are seeing the same issue, can you click on "I have this question too" on Apple's community page? Perhaps if enough people click that, it might get some attention.

I have since switched to using Email app (Edison Mail) and it doesn't have this issue. It seems to be a Mail (Apple's) app issue.

One of the unfortunate things about the Edison Mail app is that they appear to have access to your mail and can actually even read it (or at the very least have done so in the past as part of their design and development apparently).

That may be the case but Edison has an option in settings to opt-out of data sharing, unlike other 3rd party iOS mail clients I've tried. In any case, my emails aren't end-to-end encrypted so I'm sure all my emails were already being read somewhere along their path. If Apple fixes the Mail app I might go back to it someday. Until then I'll keep using Email, it's a really great mail app.

Not using Lock Screen or Notification Center Notifications for email (Banners, Badges, Sound only), so, a wild stab...

Wonder if tied to grouping? For example, if you have one email Notification, tap, takes you to the email. If you have grouped/stacked notifications for multiple emails, tap, takes to the app as there are maybe three notifications, and even though you meant the top/visible one, iOS is not assuming that. Similar thinking re: multiple accounts and multiple Notifications. So, if the case of multiple Notifications, maybe try expanding the group and then tap the Notification of interest.

This happens with single emails as well as multiples, groupings don’t make a difference with this bug.

Interestingly it’s only happening with my iCloud email, not my @outlook.com email. Those are going straight to the email.

I have an open case with Apple support that needs escalating. Will do that next week when I’m back at home.
