My local ad also lists it as $79.99. I went to target on launch weekend, they almost ran out of 5c except yellow sprint.

You honestly think that Apple is not providing the discounts for the retailers to do this?

I would be very surprised if they are, they never have before. High volume retailers get volume discounts from Apple as they always have and its their choice to pass some of the saving on to their customers. In this case they are just reducing their margins.

These are the same people that want a phone free on contract.

This is true but Apple do not currently cater for that market. The 5C may well have been an attempt to get to the free on contract price point but didn't quite get there at launch, I would not be surprised if they become free on contract in Q1 next year though.;)

Better in the hand? If someone gave you a $600 piece of crystal or glass to carry around all day would YOU not have some protection around it? That's the joke about all cell phones. When it's all said and done, it's the os that matters cuz nearly everyone covers up the rest of the phone.

This is true but people tend to go with what they like in the shop where the phones are just sitting there on display without cases. I do see a surprising number of people using iPhones without cases though.

Whoever's idea it was to make a neon green phone should be fired.

Well, it was a key factor in bringing me back into the iPhone world. Sorry, but I don't think "this product isn't as popular, thus someone should be fired" is a good answer. Also, I think the 5C popularity will level out more over the holiday season and it'll prove a slightly better product for Apple than if they'd kept the 5 and dropped the price $100. It does two things:

1. It gets people like me who love the unique colours, and wanted something different, and didn't care as much about specs back into iPhone (I'd switched from an iPhone 4S to a Nexus 4).

2. It gets people who DON'T want a coloured phone but don't care about specs (business types, more serious, have the money) to buy up to a 5S instead of getting last year's model.

THAT, dear sir, is a win-win for Apple. A bright, pretty, coloured phone for the teenage mindset (not necessarily just teenagers, I bought one); and more differentiation between last year's model for the older crowd who may not buy up for specs but will to get a metal iPhone.
