When I plug in the mac in target disk mode to my computer I get unknown vendor and model IEEE 1394 sbsp2 device in the device manager.

I've heard this is at least semi common.

There was someone that posted 2 to 3 years ago with a site to fix this but the site that he linked to I think changed.

I really would like to access this powerbook to copy files to my PC.
 
Ok, so I was able to get it to work once, removed the ieee 1394 controller, rebooted and the device manager looked good and the drive was showing. It copied a fair amount of files and then stopped. The device manager showed the same problem again.
