whats the palce on the body where you feel the leest pain?

The deltoid is supposed to be the most painless location (thats why you see so many tats there). The ass is supposed to hurt the most. Noise/vibration is really bad on the head and area near the ears.

A lot of people who don't have tattoos talk about not liking needles, but its really not something needle-like. I have a curiously high tolerance for pain (as in i've been running on 2 seriously broken legs and didn't notice) so your mileage may vary, but for me it just feels like someone is scratching me with their fingernails (kind feels nice). The annoying part for me is the time it takes (sitting around for hours on end while someone scratches you isn't much fun) and the noise (that constant buzz and vibration gets on your nerves after awhile).

Another cool thing is that afterwards the skin is raised, so you have a pretty neat little texture added to your skin as well as an image (so your girlfriend/boyfriend can enjoy it in the dark too).

Chip - nice design and plan for your new tattoo. I'd check and make sure who originally created the piece you're thinking of getting, you know, make sure the artist wasn't some right-wing nutjob or something. I've come across some beautiful pieces in my time only to discover the artist and I are completely at odds (life, politics, religion, etc.) - I wouldn't want that work on me no matter how good looking.

That being said, if you have the money, I say go for a major back piece. The picture you present would not translate well to even a 6x6 - there's just too much detail, unless you stick with black ink only. The real kicker in that one is the biplane - to get nice, rich, non-bleeding over time detail, that alone begs to be 4 inches long.

A back piece will hurt over bone but not that much more. I have four tattoos: dolphin at the base of my spine, tree-frog on outer right bicep, phases of the moon on my right forearm, and a small sleeping kitten on top of my sternum (this one hurt the most of all, being right over the bone).

In general, I tend to believe that tattoos should have personal meaning of some sort - I know a lot of folks who got stuff that looked really cool but lacked personal meaning, and wound up hating their tattoos in a short period of time. Each of my tattoos has meaning to me, as your polar bear would to you. I like how you've interpreted the image, and look forward to seeing pics of it in process/complete.

My next tattoo will be the alchemal symbol for clay (because I'm a potter) on my outer right bicep (to "finish" the arm for the moment) - I'm also thinking of queerifying it a bit and having it done in rainbow hues, but we'll see...

can you listen to music/ipod while you get it done?

i've long been tossing around the idea of getting two tattoos, one on the back of each of my upper arms... right around where a short sleeve shirt would end (so that they're pretty much hidden). the two would go together, but not be the same, and most likely based on some lyrics or other phrase/idea that is important to me. obviously the tough part is picking it. and then i've been working on coming up with the accompanying imagery.

placeofdis- once i get time to come up with a better idea, i may very well ask you for some help with design...... if dat's coo

Oh cool, a tattoo talk thread!! Well here is mine...its small on the lower back...got it almost 10 years ago....its artwork from one of my fav movies Romeo and Juliet --Baz Lurhmann's version! I am a huge William Shakespeare lover for one thing and loved Leonardo DiCpario in that movie too)! ;) http://www.romeoandjuliet.com/ its colors are mainly made of red, pink and purple with white highlights but the cross is what I told the artist to copy basically--he put a little purple heart in the middle instead of the "and" symbol of course!! :) The art director for that film was nominated for an Oscar too!

I forget its even there unless someone notices when I lean over or something. That is how my parents saw it the first time....they FREAKED out cause I was climbing in the car and I was wearing a low rise mini-shirt. They had just traveled up to Va.Tech to take me out for my birthday and and the minute they saw it they turned around and drove back home immediately. :( Yes they overreacted and they did call me and apologize later. :)

I probably will never get another one unless I designed something cool to go around this one to make it more decorative. One is enough for my body though! :)

I was also thinking... I am a it overwheight and I am only 16(tattoos are legal in spain with parental concent), what happens if I were to loose weight or maybe grow a bit(tattoo will be small, no bigger then 2X2)?

depends on the location of the tattoo really, and how much weight is lost.

for example, your lower back and stomach areas stretch a lot when you gain weight, and when you lose a lot of it, and i do mean it takes a lot, the tattoo can be altered due to the elasticity of skin, but it varies upon person, skin type, and location, size of tattoo etc.

your best bet would be to go to a tattoo parlor and talk with the various artists for their opinions, better would be to go to a couple and get opinions to be sure, it never hurts to ask.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I dont think it would be appropriate to start a new thread on the same topic, Also I want to thank Chip NoVaMaC and PlaceofDis for answering a lot of my tattoo questions, I love the polar bear by the way.
I finally figured out the tattoo I want, I will probably be getting it tomorrow. I want this line on my forearm, "I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death" From the song NY state of mind by nas. I want it no longer then 7 cm long and I ant it in 2 lines 2 lines. Can you guys help me pick a cool font or just general tips, I have already ruled out comic sans lol.

ideas i have thought of:

year of birth (like james hetfield of metallica)
location (he he, like kirk hammett of metallica)

where are u going to put the tat?

Nuff.
On my forearm and inch below my wrist, it will be 6 inches long and I will make the phrase in 2 lines, the 2 directly below the first line.

I just noticed, I forgot to write the whole rhyme, the whole phrase that I will get tattooed will be " It drops deep, as it does in my breath, I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death" Anyone know a ballpark figure of how much it will cost about 6 inches long in 2 or 3 lines with a simple font not filled in and in black?

No way ive only got 200 euros, man thats alot of CASH, even if the font is soo small?

any good tattoo artist will tell you, they can only go so small without it fading or being so acturate. the smaller it is, sometimes trickier. they are expensive, each of my wrists were $60, and thats by no means the best artist available to me, he costs $120 an hour, but by far the best tattoo artist i have ever met, the the other artists go to him for their work.

tattoos are by no means cheap. remember, just because you think it iwll look good doesnt mean they can necissarily do it, ive been told before that a certain design i wanted (namely a certain coin) couldn't be done at a small size because of the intricate design involved.

again, i highly recommend you sit down and talk to an artist about this before going through with it. trust me, you may want to rush and just get it done, but get it done right.

I will definitiley go talk to an artist first, and my mother(yes my mother, Im only 16) is making me go to a reputable place because she is worried about infections and such. I knew they werent cheap but I never anticipated a price like $300. The tattoo is gonna be there forever so I dont want to go to a cheap place, I want it done right.

around here, by a good artist, yours would seem to be between 150 and 200 in my opinion, only because of the detail needed to do the font

depends on the artist actually, ive never thought of it, but they just might, conversation is always good though. ;)

and ill have no problems helping you out with the design, i would be my pleasure, i was going to major in art at one time, and i still have a passion for it, just more so for poetry.

pm me or im me or whatever whenever you want and we can discuss it, or if this thread is still alive... here will work as well.
