There is no Apple store in VT, yet it still says I need to pay tax... is that how it will actually work? Is there no way around it? or can I call nad not have to pay the taxes? thanks

If you buy online at macconnection I think it's tax free and free shipping. Saved a few hundred dollars on my girlfriends ibook that way. I don't know where they are based out of, but as long as it's not in your state, they don't have to (and won't) charge sales tax.

wow, didn't know that. i'll have to keep that in mind come my next buy - though i'll have to be sure to compare prices of edu discount vs no tax. thanks for the info, though!
Exactly, and big companies like apple have a " business presence" in every state. They more or less volunteer this to simplify the process on their side.
Before you start searching, there is no way to get an edu discount other than from apple.
There is no way to not pay tax from apple, hence there is no way to pay no tax and get an edu discount. Sorry.

Just go to New Hampshire and buy it. If you're not getting the educational discount, you could buy from Amazon. They have no sales tax in a lot of (most?) states and often have good rebates on Macs on top of that.
There are some geographic anomalies as you mentioned, and the no sales tax weekends are becoming more common, but my statements are still generally true.
No it's 8.75% tax here and that's why I bought from Amazon. Also got the $150 rebate in six weeks from them so it was better than the EDU price on my iMac. I saved a total of $300 and had it shipped next day, same as my Ram and a few other things.
