Apple today announced that Taylor Swift has been named Apple Music's Artist of the Year for 2023 after reaching "a new realm of superstardom this year."

Swift released a new album last month called 1989 (Taylor's Version), and she has been on tour this year. Apple says in the first 10 months of 2023, Swift had 65 songs reach Apple Music's Global Daily Top 100, which was more than any other artist.

"I am so honored to be Apple Music's Artist of the Year," said Swift. "Thank you to every single one of you for making this year the most incredible, joyful, celebratory year ever. From streaming the music nonstop to screaming it together in real life at the shows, dancing chaotically in movie theaters, none of this would have been possible without you. Thank you so much."

"Taylor Swift's impact on music is absolutely undeniable — not just this record-breaking year, but throughout her entire career," said Oliver Schusser, Apple's vice president of Apple Music and Beats. "She is a generation-defining artist and a true change agent in the music industry, and there is no doubt that her impact and influence will be felt for years to come. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate her achievements."

Swift will receive a physical Apple Music Award featuring Apple's custom 12-inch silicon wafer.

With her Chiefs connection, she would have been a sure thing for the Apple Music Super Bowl halftime show at least as a cameo, but she is on tour during it.

Bruh all she did was re-sing old albums this year just so she could own the full rights to them...

Why is she the artist of the year...

Coming from a Swiftie btw.
Meh, these awards are popularity contests. She was the big name this year in music. I am not a Swiftie but it was clearly her name I saw the most.

ok but....

I guess it's good but....

I dunno.

Apple is just doing what apple do.

There was a time about a decade (or two) ago when they might instead be highlighting more niche artists. even though it would usually be adult contemporary stuff, it would still be niche.

but Taylor Swift is just filling the role that U2 used to - it shows apple is safe, populist, middle of the road, and all about the billionaires.

The last thing Apple wants to facilitate is the democratisation of new music discovery. In their world, you WILL like Taylor Swift, and before that Lady Gaga, and before that U2, and so on.

Not sure why people are sarcastically calling this a bold choice or saying it should be some small niche artist. "Artist of the Year" will always go to a big name. It'd be weird if it didn't.

I mean yeah but...they could have thought a little harder. Surely someone else this year did something more original or interesting or new. Not hating on her, she is killing it at everything, clearly. Which is perhaps why it is not, as some are saying, a particularly bold choice.

Uncool take that I totally agree with. Swift doesn’t need the exposure. Her acknowledging statement actually feels like a bit of a climb-down because, let’s face it, this isn’t that prestigious for her.

But it explains why she would be the choice. Who better to choose than the person killing it at everything?

Who did something more interesting than having the biggest tour of all time?

I don't know but coming from Apple you'd think it would have been something Shot on iPhone. They sure seemed to love Olivia Rodrigo this year.

This is just kind of the pattern that makes Apple Music not appealing to me personally. I definitely am not using it for deep cuts, they use it to promote what's popular. I didn't really need their advice to listen to Taylor Swift. I've heard that one from a few places already. Like everywhere I look.

I use Apple Music to play whatever song just wriggled its way into my consciousness. Really dig that I can play almost any piece of recorded music at a whim.

Yesterday, “Ride Captain Ride” came into my head so I played it. Same with “Green Eyed Lady”, “Magic Carpet Ride”, and “Peaches” in different days. Heck, I think it’s time to play “Low Rider” and maybe some Mahavishnu Orchestra now. :)
