I was referring more to how nice and thin the Pro is. I never saw a regular Macbook up close, but they look thicker which makes it seem more sturdy.

Having handled them both, I would say the aluminium macbook pro is sturdier, although I think the plastic macbook is heavier, but I have a sneaky feeling the plastic would break upon impact. I quite liked the white macbook too, shame they never updated it with a newer processor before the discontinuation.

Nah, the plastic is not weak. My brother has the white MB before the multitouch one and that has been through hell (drops, scrapes, dirt) and it looks alright with the wrist area chipping.

They are thicker, yes. However having used both the MacBook & MacBook Pro for extended periods of time I've found the aluminium of the MacBook Pro's is worlds stronger. You cannot make the chassis of the MBP bend, even if you put all your weight on it. The MacBook often suffers from cracking...

I believe the cracking issues are far less common on the unibody plastic than the previous gen.

I would suggest a option of 3:

11" MBA w/128gb SSD ($1149USD)
13" MBA w/128gb SSD ($1249USD)
13" Base MBP ($1099USD)

This get's you all three options at ~1100-1250, which is only a little more then the old MacBooks', gives the teachers some level of choice, gives people who "need" a ODD the option, all while keeping the price down.

personally I prefer them to be a little chunkier - I am not a huge fan of ultra-thin technology - it feels somewhat delicate. I am a clumsy man so I need something sturdy!
