Sometimes. 
I once dated quite a hot german girl who obviously had no taste if she was dating me, but we had to break up for......"hygiene reasons." Those East German chicks man.......We won't go into details.
Anyway, didn't learn a bit of German.
I tried to learn Mandarin that way. Progress was going well....then we broke up, and...........motivation was gone.

This is basically how I learned English and Spanish and I don't consider myself to be terribly bad at it.

I dated a German girl..well.. her mom was from Germany and her Dad was born in the US, but he was still mostly German. She spoke it fluently, but never really did around me.
She was a cute little thing, until she dumped me the day before Valentines Day. I took all her stuff back and got my $ back
