I don't seriously imagine I'll camp out for an iPhone, but let's say I did. Hmm, what would I pack? Who would camp with me? Would I go to Craigslist and solicit a team or gather friends?

    Let's have fun.

If you camped out for an iPhone, when would you start? What would you pack? Who would you take? Would you pay a sit-in?

    Add anything else....

I'll be camping all night. Going there straight from work (I'll try to get out a couple hours early so I can be at the store around 5 or 6). Bringing my MBP with me and my Moto Q so I can tether it to the EVDO network and post updates to my blog while I'm waiting in line =) This way I can document the chaos.

    MB Hockey,

I decided to camp out after all but just learned that my mom will be coming to town on the 28th. That sucks because I can't let her know that's what I'm doing with my money. I'll have to make up some excuse and hope I'm not on the news if I stand in line :p

    Here's my line of reasoning:

I was not planning to buy the 1st gen iPhone until I bought the Nokia N800 and fell in love with the concept of large(r), on-screen navigation, and I have to return the Nokia by the beginning of July to get a refund.

Plus my Windows Mobile HTC 8525 phone requires too many work-arounds to sync, backup and take advantage of updates. I want to sell it before the new model comes out.

I simply want an Apple phone to work with my Apple computer. Plus I can always go to the Apple store for help because AT&T and HTC's help is useless.

I have anxiously sought less popular phones in the past from Cingular in NYC (Nokia E62 and HTC 8525), and when they were out...they were OUT for a long time with no re-stock date in sight. I can't imagine what will happen if they run out of the iPhone. I could be wrong because they may stock plenty with anticipation. We'll see...

You're very mistaken then. Think about the Wii and the PS3. Neither had as much hype as the iPhone has. In today's consumer market, people don't care about how much something costs, as long as they can put it on their credit card and pay it off later. You are also forgetting about the huge numbers of people who have decided not to sign a new contract since January because they've been waiting for the iPhone.

The Wii had something like a half million units at launch, and it sold out instantly. Rumor has it that there will only be about a quarter million iPhones. If you don't think they're going to sell out and stay sold out, then you clearly are misreading the signs.

not to mention people who buy several just to sell them online at an outrageous rate.

seriously - people arnt so stupid to break contracts with verizon, tmobile etc...... think of the porting process involved.... etc...... its not so easy to buy an iphone as it is a wii or PS3 at launch....... their is "tape" with the Iphone....... Realistically, you only have 1/3rd of the population who might be interested in such a device

And I'm trying to tell you that people have been anticipating the arrival of the iPhone for 6 months. Many people have held off on signing a new contract just for the iPhone. If 1/3 of the population were interested in the iPhone, Apple will have hit a home run.

With the Wii and PS3, those items catered only to a certain demographic...gamers. The iPhone is targeted at all cell phone / iPod users, which is a much, much larger demographic. 1/3 of that is still more than the number of gamers out there, and there's only about half the supply. There will be lines, and there will be shortages.
