so the only question becomes... will they all be sourced from the same manufacturer? i clearly recall a small dust-up a while back when it was found the PCIe SSDs in the macbooks were sourced from different manufacturers and the drives had significantly different speed test results.

I do love the irony that the main benefit of this new model results from using more Samsung parts.

I will never forget the idiot who posted here some time ago that anything Samsung was banned from his house.

(apart from all the items in his Apple products)

:D

So funny

I just bought a 2014 model back in June. Why does it always seem like the major advancments come soon after you make your purchase?

Were you unconscious for 8 months? June (aka "Soon") was 9 months ago. Just look at the complaining when Apple _doesn't_ update their machines for extended periods. The Mac Pro is a good example.

iFixIt, how is this still a thing?

iFixIt has consistently put down any and all Mac products because they don't like the reliability and claim they can't fix or replace everything they used to be able to. Luddites.

i guess its no big deal for those people who just throw things away when the break and buy a new one. "green" indeed. Do you trade in your car when you get a flat? Sell your home when the AC breaks?

People go to the Apple Store and get their Mac serviced. They don't throw them away. LOL!

Actually people seem to be replacing their computers less often than they used to, according to sales figures.

The 11-inch MacBook Air did not receive the same flash storage update.

That's a bit disappointing, suppose you prefer the smaller size, you'd then have to settle for half the disk performance for no obvious reason at all.

Edit: I wonder if it's the same if you add the larger disk to the 11" or if the performance is consistent across the line.

Is the new HD in the new 13" MacBook Pro and updated MacBook Air faster than the flash HD in the 15" Macbook Pro?

Should read:

Is the SSD in the new 13" MacBook Pro and updated MacBook Air faster than the SSD in the 15" Macbook Pro?

Reading in the comments below, the tests performed by the team at iFixit suggest it's just a faster SSD (rather than a new/updated PCI bus.) (Thanks Kyle)

Luddites? I'm not sure you know what that means. Otherwise, you probably wouldn't say that, at least in this case. For instance, replacing the SSD within any Apple laptop now voids the warranty of said product, even though it's arguably easier to replace now than it ever was.

Additionally, is it necessary for Apple to solder RAM to the logic board? No. They do it because today's RAM is so reliable, that they don't have to worry about replacing it, vs. SSDs that may need replacement/upgrading in the future. However, by soldering RAM to the LB, they force users to spend much more for added RAM that has a much higher profit margin for Apple. If they were to solder the SSD to the LB, they'd potentially have to replace a complete LB for a defective part (the SSD) that has a much higher rate of failure, equating to more money lost by Apple.

There are more examples, but I don't feel like continuing, so...

I can personally speak to this. Once I buy a mac I typically keep it for 5-6 years and only upgrade because the new OS doesn't support the old hardware. My macs run strong until the end. With windows pc's they last only a year or so depending how much you spend.

Think Apple with put that big "2X faster", err, SLOWER, png on their website?

Average consumers are retarded but does that mean they deserve not to know what that extra $200 buys them?

Are you being serious with that last statement? There are plenty of Windows computers that can and do run strong for years.

My questions is, when will manufacturers start putting the PCIe drives out for us to upgrade our Airs ourselves? I am ready to update my 2013 Air from 128gb to 256gb or maybe 512gb depending on price.

I'd like to buy one of these new drives and install it if the price is decent.

I sincerely wish they'd post the speeds of each SSD option on the site. I know that's not their style. But as a pro it would be immensely helpful. Maybe just a clickable number that led to a foot note.

The updated iMac Retina will be the way to go. No possibility of retina tax. Better CPU, GPU, and obviously faster SSD.

Wonder could I throw one of these into my nmp for that extra 200mb/s lol

Yes, these drives started appearing last fall in on Ebay and have been tested in cMP in a PCIE adapter.

Venture over to Mac Pro forum.

I've got a couple of them laying around the house, sending one to Barefeats for him to try out.

Do really believe what you spout? Honestly, no issue with you being an Apple fan, but for goodness sake, give it a rest on the PC crap. You either have no idea what you are talking about or just want to troll. There is as much Samsung & Intel inside a PC as a Mac (which shock horror is a Personal Computer also) and they last just as long as each other. In all likelihood a 'windows' PC's can have a longer life, given the typically easier upgrade options available over a 'Mac PC'

Now what I am wondering is if the 13" rMBP has the same speeds as the 13" Air or is it even faster?
