I’d rather quickly give the phone 10-20% of charge by a traditional power bank and unplug/disconnect the phone and use it as usual without adding the bulk.
Then the problem would be does those power banks support MagSafe charger. I don’t have iPhone 12 so can’t really test, but if power bank don’t support MagSafe then iPhone battery better last 2 days minimum with heavy use (intensive gaming).

I can’t wait - receive on Monday! Next stop is to Bunnings to purchase a pacific blue spray paint to colour match my iPhone 12.

It's alright with me.

But I don't think this is the best usage of MagSafe: There should be a version with no Lightning port that only charges via the iPhone or MagSafe to free up the space the Lightning port components need. This could have made it smaller or upped the mAh a bit.

I hope there's a MagSafe Smart Battery Case in the pipeline with no Lightning port and MagSafe only.

Then again. If this isn't as prone to slipping off in my pockets as I'm expecting, then maybe a case version is redundant. Crossing my fingers.

These things have existed fo awhile now, I've seen an Anker one on Amazon :/ What is so special about a power bank with a ring of magnets? If anything it's worse for the environment lol.

They need stronger magnets. or a much better design. Careful people...

I guess it's something about just popping it on without a case or any kind of straps or anything that's supposed to make it appealling in a sort of futuristic, 100% wireless and minimalist way.

The thing is just, as many YouTubers have pointed out, that the magnets on most of these packs, both third party and from Apple, only work well enough when pushing and pulling in certain directions and almost not at all not in others, resulting in it quite easily coming off once friction is applied.

So in the end, it might be much easier to use these MagSafe battery packs than, say, having to slip on something like the Apple Smart Battery Case, and the footprint might be also be smaller for a lot of them(not sure).
But they don't hold on well enough for you to slip the whole iPhone + battery pack combo in your jean pockets, or really any kind of pocket or bag where something might push or pull on the battery pack.

Considering how less-than-optimally they stick to your iPhone and how a lot of the mAhs will be lost to heat and never charge your iPhone's battery, then I don't see how valuable these battery packs can be unless they're dirt cheap.

Sure, it looks a lot sleeker and probably is better integrated into iOS than most other options. But I would care less about how it looks if it's just there to get my phone through a very long day... which I'm not entirely confident this can do for me.

Since Apple isn't mentioning the "up tp 50% longer battery life" claim that they did for the Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 11, then I'm thinking this would only add something like 25-40% longer battery life.

The MagSafe Battery Pack is big on features but low on mAhs.

All video review I watched are all laughing at the low performance of this thing. The small battery, slow charging speed and limited size to iphone12 mini.

My impression: $70 are for iOS UI, the rest $30 for the HW.

Thank you, no, I prefer to lug a powerbank instead of an ugly pack'o'magnets.

Too thick, would have been happier with a very thin one that just added an hour or so, 2-pack 29.95
Apple could also make iPhones where the lens does not obscenely protrude from the casing so that you can never simply place it on a flat surface.

The battery life gained by such a measure alone would dry up the market for such an ugly piggyback-wart.

Anyway: If I need power on the go, I prefer a simple, cheap powerbank.

The reverse wireless charging + lightning is a unique value add for me and makes it versatile and convenient.

Most other bricks have their own charger (micro USB even 🤮). That's a nope from me dawg. I like that I can pack this thing with just my normal iPhone + charger no additional charger. It can be left plugged in on the bedside table and used as a wireless charging base, or taken on the go as needed.

Yeah. I’ve got one. I actually quite like it. Thinking of maybe getting a few, to keep in various jackets as emergency backup. I think the idea is you keep it separate from the phone and only attach when you need the charge. Not attached all the time. It’s small enough to fit into my pocket without the phone attached and I hardly notice it.

This is the same as with the wallet and is really not that big an issue (at least for me). If the guy in the linked article had moved his fingers up a 1/4 of an inch so his fingertips were against the side of the phone instead of resting only on the battery it wouldn't have "popped" off. I have used the wallet since launch and has only come off a couple of times during actual use. It is easier to remove the wallet by sliding it off to the side than pulling it straight off so if you're pulling it out of a tight pocket you may have an issue, but for normal pockets (like mine) I've never had a problem. I expect that this will be the same with the MagSafe battery.

Also, I hardly use the power button on an iPhone since it has raise to wake and tap to wake.

What a piece of sheet. They could have made the phone 0.7mm thicker and given everyone the additional battery capacity.
