My internet is more than fast enough to handle a 1080p stream, but on my MacBook Pro 2011 YouTube keeps stepping down all the way to 360p unless I manually select 1080p.

How do I fix this? Is there some background setting to my internet connection that could be causing YouTube to think my connection is not as good as it is? A hidden browser setting I can tweak?

Also if this isn't in the right place, please feel free to move.

Check your account settings. I've been having this same issue off and on on a variety of browsers including Chrome. 🙁 We're on a 400 Mbps plan ourselves. I've come to the conclusion it has to do with congestion from that particular server(s) that's feeding you the video. Mine goes from 1080p-1440p to 720p.

What would I look for in account settings?

Playback performance should be an option. Otherwise, if it's not available for you personally (A/B testing), then you can install an extension that allows you to stream with your preferred quality.
