We're talking about technology.

Your argument makes no sense at all. He drives a coupe and then you tell him to buy a Japanese car because it has more technology for cheaper, but it doesn't matter if it is a coupe or not? How does that make any sense?

Should have gotten a higher trim level then...

Probably.

Though at the time of ordering it was irrelevant which trim level I brought. S-Line and Black Edition models only just started getting MMI as standard in the past year.

Audi have let the A4/A5 fall way behind the competition. The interior design and tech is straight from 2008.

B8 has been around for a long time now. Replacement (B9) should be out by the end of the year.

Head up display.

I wish my car had that option. Back in 2009 it was expensive (and still is) and doesn't look nearly as good as what BMW is offering now- a much larger projection, full color, and more information. It appears recently a lot of other manufactures are offering HUD's.

I've seen a few aftermarket HUD gizmos involving navigation and text messages. I can't imagine they work that well.

Wow, and 86 Camry! I can only assume that you have taken great care of the vehicle. That's a lot of custom work. Are you a "car guy" with mechanical skills and have you done the work yourself? Post some pics.

In my teens and early 20's I was into having a great audio system in my car and spent a good deal of money (my parent's money) getting things just how I wanted them. As I've aged though, cars have become more of a simple tool that depereciate in value so I dont' invest in customization. You know, marriage, kids, limited income, etc., in other words, I'm boring when it comes to this kind of stuff. :D However, I do like to live vicariously through others and it's always cool to see when people do things like you have done. All the best with your continued upgrades and fine tuning. :)

I am glad you like it! I am only 18 years old but yes I have done everything myself (and on a high school budget haha) I really enjoy working on cars and try to get everything for the best price. I understand how you are my Dad is the same, he likes to live vicariously through me on things like this. It's sorta a hobby for me, I got the car for free a couple years ago (someone's grandparent was throwing it away and the kids didn't want it so I took it off there hands for them, they were very happy. I ended up giving them $300 for it though)

I have now successfully wired the DVD player into the vehicle and have a port for a usb flash drive to plug in (for digital movies.) The sound system is about $700 brand new but I got the whole thing for $50 at thrift stores and garage sales. Besides the tech in the vehicle I have put a new windshield, new brakes, new tires and a new muffler (to make it quieter). It is surprisingly a really reliable little car and it's great for driving to school and work.

All the tech stuff like I mentioned is a hobby, it's not very well done but It's something I enjoy in my free time from my relatively busy schedule.

Why in the hell does anyone need to watch movies while driving?

Not while driving, but while parked or for the passenger to enjoy while on a long trip. The screen is also capable of displaying driver information such as weather and road conditions, and a view from the cars front and rear facing camera.

Indeed. Agreed.

Unless it is for the benefit of a possible passenger, I am not entirely sure what actual purpose this might serve….

People hate restrictions.

I did the same thing to my previous car. Bought an OEM dash screen with DVD, Nav, backup cam, and the works, from China dirt cheap. Looked as stock as the original which would have cost me $800 more with less features.

I modded it to view movies from DVD or external storage while driving. My girl loved watching movies from the passenger seat. I'm not stupid enough to drive an watch, but I can listen. I also modded to turn on the backup cam while driving when I want, solely cause it cool. :D

My car has a **** load of tech. GPS nav screen, second touch screen, all kinds of backup and collision warnings, blind spot warning system, lane keep system, voice controls that actually work, HD stereo although I just have an iPod plugged into one of the USB ports. All kinds of cool ****
Yeah.... until all that **** breaks in a few years then youll have to pay several hundred (or even thousand) of dollars to fix it all.

As far a tech goes.... not much of anything:

Daewoo:
Sony CD Stereo with Remote and AUX in:
GPS Unit attached to windsheild
MP3 Player attached to vent (CD Player will also play MP3 CDs)
what to add:
Factory Fog lights
LED DRLs
Euro-spec Taillights
Car Alarm

Impala:
CD Player
int. wipers
fog lights
DRLs
Alarm
Sunroof
Power EVERYTHING
GPS Unit on top of Dash

My 2013 Audi A5 came with depressingly little in the way of toys.

Looks awesome, drives great, but less equipped than its German rivals.

But that is the German way of doing such things.

The standard (basic) model has the engine and the brand name; I suspect that they make their money from the high prices they charge for what they call 'extras', or 'options'. Add on a sufficient number of these, and your initial price will run the risk of soaring….."

sounds like me, all the work ill get to as far as the fog lights and DRLs will be done enough to work not to look like a pro, its wiring.... whose gonna see it? the wiring will most likely be done by twisting wires together and using Wire nuts or "Looping" them together and using electrical tape.

not sure if that modding..... the ability to watch movies while driving is just a wire you hook up so it only works in park.... if you put the wire to the case of the unit itll play movies all the time, this IS illegal of course.... I assume the backup camera works the same way (Wire to the reverse light circuit) I actually one time thought of getting Parking Sensors and Backup sensors for my Daewoo (because i was bad at parking) but as ive gotten more experenced with driving theres not much use to have either of those. I just look through my mirrors when backing up... A front parking assist or camera WOULD be quite handy however, I even have a 7" Screen i could use for it.

EDIT perhaps using the Front and rear cameras would be good for some ghetto dashcamming? the cameras are cheaper than a Dashcam, how to get it recorded and online would be the challenge.
