The vast majority of people keep phones and even other devices 2 years of less. Why would Apple cater to the minority?

All the information I can find points to the iPhone 5 (not the C as thats listed separately) which is 3 years old. I was having this discussion with a friend about this but I can't find any good evidence its true but tons of evidence its not.

If you look at the bottom page of Apple website in the fine print is says 1 gb ram. Of course that was on the page where they were comparing all the iPhone models so still not sure.
