Which 3rd-party disk utility is the best? Techtool Pro or DriveGenius or another one?
I am running Sierra and High Sierra on my first MacPro 5.1 and Yosemite on my second 5.1
TIA

I use TT Pro, and like it a lot. However - They will charge am upgrade fee at the drop of a hat. Last year I paid upgrade fees on 12/13/17, 9/18/17 & 2/28/17. And now with the release of TT Pro 10, they want another upgrade fee!

Both have their strengths and weaknesses
What are you trying to accomplish, maybe that will help in giving a recommendation
primary for disk repair and optimize hard disks.
I notice Drive Genius has also backup features but I already have CCC.

Does Drive Genius support AFS? I think TTP 10 does, it is supposed to be among the new features. Like Lou I have paid for multiple upgrades. Will likely get 10 but only after I read reviews or see posts of people who get some experience with it. :D

If you are just interested in disk repair, it's DiskWarrior (although they still do not fully support APFS):

MacWorld gave it a 5 star rating. They rated TechTool Pro 4, Drive Genius 3.5, although the latter reviews are really, really old:

DiskWarrior ($119) is just disk repair. Techtool Pro 10 ($99) has a whole slew of utilities and tests, Drive Genius 5 ($79) is just disk. For the extra $20 personally I'd go with TechTool and get all of the other tests and utilities.

If you are installing on two machines it makes things more complicated. The license controls on these utilities tends to be very strict so I would check the cost for 2 licenses before purchasing. I just did the TechTool Pro 10 upgrade, and they did have an option to purchase an additional 2 licenses, but I didn't check the cost.

My understanding is 9.6.3 does not support APFS for disk repair/rebuilds. Wondering if TTP 10 does.
"Techtool Pro will test, rebuild, and repair damaged directories on corrupted hard drives, and optimize the data directories when they are repaired. Techtool Pro supports Apple's new APFS file system, standard Mac OS Extended volumes, as well as MS-DOS (FAT32) and ExFAT formatted volumes."
This seems promising.

How did you end up paying upgrade fees 3 times? I used to use TT Pro and I'd renew everytime a new version became available, but that only meant upgrading everytime there was a new MacOS.

Are these needed for SSDs or just hard drives? I haven't seen drive issues and corruption on SSDs yet.
