I'm going to quibble with the term "smashes".

That indicates to me that he bested the old mark by a wide margin, when he only beat it by three-tenths of a second.

It could work if many of the recent records were won by improvements on the order of 0.01. I have no idea if that's the case.
 
Depends on the initial position of the colors. Anyway, didn't these disappear with the ZX81?

So how old are these teens? I know that there is a way to solve this cube, but I never figured it out. It will take me more than 5 seconds to examine what colors are on each side... ahahah!

To be fair, in competitions the contestants are allowed a period to examine the cube. That's not taken into account in the records.

I finally figured out how to do it around Christmas time (the website has an easy-to-follow tutorial). I can usually do it in under 3 minutes now. Once you memorize a few simple patterns, it's easy to get times close to that. But these speed-cubers are on a whole different level.
