Telegram is by far the best messaging app. And the native apps for desktop (without the need to be connected to an active device) an device make it a fantastic app. It's fast. Sending images on iMessage is a 3 touch process and then actually sending is awfully slow. I have converted my social circle and family to Telegram and no looking back.

I always say, use what is best for you, but most people who move over don't regret it.

Also, it isn't Facebook. That is reason enough.

I got immediately repulsed with WhatsApp the moment it was taken over by Facebook. I knew this is just to gain more hooks into our lives with contact info and such and I am never happy with this. At the very least, if this guy wants to know everything about the world, he better have a live cam streaming the minutiae of all aspects of his life to the world. Surely, the guy who wants to rape the privacy of the world and is successful at it, shouldn't mind if his own privacy is up for grabs by the world.

However, more depressing is that people are happy he is raping their privacy. They will question those who raise their voices against the raping of their privacy.

BEWARE of RUSSIAN TELEGRAM.
It is spyware and does not offer proper on device end-to-end-encryption like iMessage as standard.

Beware of iCloud Backup too! Do not use it.

And some services, like Facebook Messenger and Telegram, only offer end-to-end encryption if you deliberately turn it on. Others, like iMessage, only offer end-to-end encryption when both users are using a particular device (in the case of iMessage, both users need to be using an iPhone).
In group chats this is not possible for instance.
Also multi device feature of telegram turns that off. (Not possible to have e2e chats across devices)

Thanks for info but your first link actually is incorrectly displayed, since that’s not the score on the mentioned site.
Good to know WhatsApp has improved.

I recently switched to Telegram, no WhatsApp any more.

WhatsApp is total garbage. They still don’t even support the freaking iPad. It’s a company that has become fat and lazy.

Telegram supports all of my devices (really - all). I have a raspberry pi for hobby projects, and it even has a Linux command-line client (not practical, I know, but WhatsApp supports almost nothing).

They left Russia. even if they were still in Russia, I trust that over Facebook any day.
Facebook is creepy but don’t understate the threat of Russia. They murder and imprison people based on their political views on a daily basis, including chemical weapons attacks in foreign countries where they put innocent civilians at risk.

I get it, you were being hyperbolic. Don’t be, not about this. I see too many people talking like Russia isn’t so bad or whatever - it is. It is that bad.

You’re missing the point. Just because they are Russian, doesn’t mean they are bad. A lot of anti-virus software also comes from Russia.

Then you are using cloud persisted telegram. Meaning: all your communication is saved on telegram servers in clear text.

Telegram is the best. It does the job and much more, not part of Facebook and not a US company, and that's reason enough for me.

Telegram still has an impressive development speed for the iOS platform, given the fact they actually hate Apple as much as they possibly can and the Telegram CEO recently stated in his blog how crappy the new iPhone 12 Pro is ^^

Telegram stores chats encrypted (server-client), not in clear text. Private chats are even end-to-end encrypted. Even the regular chats have an efficient and strong encryption, making governments cry a lot. So don't say they are stored in clear text.

Telegram (and whoever they want to) can read your cloud saved chats/pics/videos.

it is encrypted in transit (like every app does) but not on telegram's servers

Are you sure of what you are saying? I would like to know how is Telegram not just working for you out-of-the-box to understand this.

Telegram works precisely as easily as WhatsApp to start a user with, and then goes on to offer far more customisation than WhatsApp does to users. It takes zero effort to start. You sign up with your number, you allow access to your contacts, Telegram conveniently starts in the contacts window telling you who are on Telegram and the chat window has everyone on Telegram already listed in plain English. Doesn't quite get much easier than that, so I am at a loss to understand what might you have found difficult to work with in this app.

Let's not even go into the options Telegram provides. Personally, I love the option to delete synced contacts - whether or not they delete on server I couldn't know, but at least there is an option - unlike WhatsApp. If you are into stickers, the ones on Telegram are passionately done and ooze character.

I would suggest to kindly not project your opinion as fact. Qualify it deservingly - that it is an opinion. And that is just my opinion.
So just so you know this is the argument an Apple and Android user has. iPhones don’t have the number of features and functionality of android but people love it because it’s simple and it just works. Are you an android user ?

Does Announce Messages With Siri works with corded headphones? It should work. I think there is no reason to prevent it to work with corded headphones.

By the way, functionality wise, Telegram is great. It is pushing the messengers forward. Most of the new features that have been added to WhatsApp in the last years were first and best on Telegram.

Also, speaking of "just works", Telegram just works with lots of devices (including iPads) without your mobile phone being online.

I do not think I made any argument in my post, at least not intentionally. All I said was that I would like to know exactly how is Telegram not just working for you out-of-the-box - to understand how do you suppose WhatsApp is easier over Telegram. You did not answer that, I know not why.

I thought we were trying to figure out how one is easier over another. I say both are as easy as any other, like I described. I do not see how my being an Android user or iOS user makes a difference here. This is not about my "mindset" if you are trying to judge me on that or trying to put me in a particular bucket based on that. It is simply about what is it that makes Telegram more difficult to get started with as against WhatsApp, as I thought you originally said.

To answer your question: I use Android as a secondary handset for business line, and I use Telegram and WhatsApp Business on that OS for business contacts. I use Telegram on iOS for my personal line for personal contacts and WhatsApp Messenger for precisely 1 contact - my accountant - who is currently not in a mood to transition to Telegram.

For me, I find Telegram more passionately, tastefully done than WhatsApp. Telegram has a warm, more personal character to it. WhatsApp feels cold and dry, in comparison. Also, major thing is privacy, which Facebook is famous for raping.

Although, on a side note, Google Play Store is on its way to becoming my primary App Store wherever possible, since the prices for app purchases and in-app purchases are cheaper as against Apple's App Store and it also allows me to key in my Tax ID to claim tax credit for the tax paid on purchases and subscriptions I use for business purposes, whereas Apple does not.

So, I call things for what they are. Some ways Apple is better, some ways Google comes out better than Apple, at least in my region. And that is why I use both.

I. Some additional read for anyone interested:

II. For those who want to decipher Telegram messages, they should do that and win this bounty, along with obvious name and fame:

Use the app that you feel comfortable with, that is the idea of this post. I am comfortable with the optional extra security when I need it or want it with Telegram, that, otherwise, is amply private and secure. If I really must have conversations over the internet on subjects that governments would be uncomfortable with, there is Signal and other niche apps as well.

Telegram at least gives you a lot of choice over your privacy, as against WhatsApp where the only thing you do know for sure is that Mr. Z is aware of your dialogues at all times.

To answer the WhatsApp "it just works thing":

I've suggested multiple times to my friends in my main group chat to move to another service like Telegram but they aren't interested. Everyone here in the UK uses WhatsApp over everything else as it's the oldest service and does everything it needs to do as a messaging app. No-one really cares that it's owned by Facebook either.
