For everyday chatter, why do people need e2ee? My life is pretty boring and so I don't care if some server somewhere can read that I didn't like dinner last night. What are people doing that they feel that they need e2ee 24/7? I'm just happy Telegram syncs flawlessly, is feature rich, and my circle of friends and family use it and love it... and it isn't Meta.

People are giving way more important information every minute by just having a phone with at least 1 Meta or Google app installed.

but if you don’t want those features you still can use secret chats which are as secure.
True, but as far as I know you can't share those between devices. And not for group chats. They would need to implement at least something like WhatsApp's device proxying to other clients for e2e encrypted chats in order to claim that secret chats are the same as WhatsApp'd default mode. Then the cabrio-coupe argument would be valid, in the current form the comparison is more like a coupe vs. a convertible whose usability is severely limited when closed.

Yea... but how many people do you think would use anything other than the default? And if that were better, why can't Telegram make that tighter setting as the default?
And that is exactly the point, most people don’t need e2e by default because it’s a compromise on convenience. You lose your phone, you lose your entire e2e chat history. But fear not, that’s why Whatsapp offers cloud backup which completely ruins the point of e2e. Okay the messages don’t go through a server while in transit, but your device sends them straight to another server afterwards. And even if you keep it off, you don’t know if the other person will.
On Telegram you simply start a secret chat if you need one and it’s very secure and e2ee. “But you can start a regular chat too so don’t use Telegram period” is the dumbest argument ever. And regular chats exist because they are very convenient, cross device, backed up, feature rich and so on. Which is really what most would want by default.

This would be the best messaging app, and would've already beaten Whatsapp and iMessage if it didn't have the most annoying "feature" of all time...

I don't need to know some plumber who fixed my sink 10 years ago just joined telegram...

Telegram is the best messenger out there. Keeps getting better.
Alot of the wierd hate is due to the fact the Telegram is not a US-based company which is a huge net positive in my book especially for security.

A lot of these third party measaging apps would fade if Apple would just release iMessage for Android and desktop.
Just charge non Apple devices a one time $5 fee to create an iCloud account with no storage or require a $.99 a month plan with 50 GB.
It’s just money waiting on the table, and we know that Apple already has us working behind the scenes.
No they wouldn't. imessage is lacking a lot of features that whatsapp has. Since moving back to the US I hate that I have to use imessage

I received only spams on iMessage and I have no friends using it. I ended up turning it off completely.

Unlucky. I have lived in two countries, one big and one small, and spam has never been a problem. Have you published your number somewhere? Or perhaps the mobile networks of the countries I have resided in do a better job of filtering.

I got via both my phone number and iCloud email address.

Give me a message app with some AI. If it sees a troll message I don’t need to be involved with, sure as politics, religion, or sports it should reply to the sender on my behalf without notifying me they are messaging until the topic is reliant again. Give me the option, by person, to have the AI engage them for as long as possible or to end the conversation.

That’s what I want from a message app.

That, and a consist experience across platforms.

You can turn off „New Contacts“ notifications.

Not spam to my number, the telegram group I setup was bombarded.

Why do we need another IM? Isn’t all the other choices enough…

I prefer telegram to WhatsApp (works on my iPad, allows for editing of message, interface just feels speedier and more modern overall).

Unfortunately, in this case, choice is more dictated by what everyone else is using than whichever option is better or superior (for said user).
